THE LEG THAT NEVER TOOK A FIRST STEP: BABY MOHAMMAD SURVIVES TRAGEDY AFTER LOSING MOTHER AND PART OF HIS TINY FUTURE

Cradled in his mother’s arms inside a shelter tent, baby Mohammad Al-Khatib should have been worrying about nothing more than feeding, sleeping, and growing.

Not yet a month old, the infant was being breastfed by his mother as she tried to comfort him amid the uncertainty surrounding their lives in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip.

The shelter where the family had sought safety was struck during the violence unfolding around them. Mohammad’s mother lost her life in the incident, while the tiny baby survived with devastating injuries.

Doctors were forced to amputate one of his legs in order to save him.

It was a leg that had never taken a first step.

A leg that had never chased a ball, run toward a parent, or carried him through childhood adventures.

According to those close to the family, the amputated limb was later buried alongside his mother — a heartbreaking symbol of everything the newborn lost before he had even begun to experience life.

Now, Mohammad faces a future no child should ever have to face alone.

Too young to understand what has happened, he will grow up knowing his mother only through photographs, memories shared by relatives, and stories about the woman who held him close until her final moments.

Family members say they are determined to surround him with love and ensure he knows how deeply he was cherished.

“His mother loved him from the moment he was born,” one relative said. “Everything she did was for him.”

Another family member added: “He is still here, and for her sake we will do everything we can to give him a future filled with hope.”

Today, baby Mohammad remains a symbol of both unimaginable loss and extraordinary survival — a child whose life story has already been marked by tragedy, yet whose future is still waiting to be written.

And while he may never remember the arms that once held him inside that shelter tent, those who loved his mother hope he will always know one thing:

He was loved from the very beginning.
