KAILUA, OʻAHU — A Thursday morning drive ended in unimaginable tragedy when a 16-year-old girl lost her life in a devastating single-vehicle crash on the Pali Highway, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

The fatal accident has left a family grieving and serves as another sobering reminder of the dangers of excessive speed and failing to wear a seat belt.

High-Speed Crash Ends in Ravine

Police say the crash occurred shortly after 6 a.m. on the northbound lanes of Pali Highway in the Kailua area.

According to investigators, the teenage driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when she lost control of her vehicle.

The vehicle struck a concrete safety barrier, became airborne, and plunged approximately 50 feet into a ravine before crashing into an embankment.

Moments later, the vehicle burst into flames.

Teen Pronounced Dead at the Scene

Authorities said the 16-year-old driver was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.

Despite the rapid response of emergency personnel, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police also confirmed that she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
