Edinburgh Mother Welcomes Two Record-Breaking Twin Boys Whose Nearly 17-Pound Combined Birth Weight Amazed Their Family and Medical Team

An Edinburgh couple has welcomed twin boys believed to be among the heaviest ever born in Scotland, after their sons arrived with a combined birth weight of nearly 17 pounds.

Alanna Merrie and her husband Paul welcomed Troy and Kaius on November 4 at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Together, the newborns weighed 16 pounds 13 ounces, a remarkable size for twins, who are often much smaller than single babies.

Troy was born weighing 8 pounds 12 ounces, while Kaius weighed 8 pounds 1 ounce. Their size surprised even the medical team, with midwives amazed by how big and healthy the boys were at birth.

The twins were delivered by Caesarean section and stayed in hospital for a week so doctors could monitor them carefully before the family returned home together.

During pregnancy, 33-year-old Alanna suspected her babies might be larger than average. Her bump was noticeably big, and she guessed each twin might weigh around five pounds. Still, nothing prepared her for the moment she learned their actual birth weights.

Family history may have played a part, as twins appear on both sides of the family. Alanna said her father had twin brothers, there are twins on her mother’s side, and Paul also has twins in his family.

The couple, who already have a young daughter, say Troy and Kaius have completed their family. Paul, a personal trainer, described their arrival as a dream come true.

For NHS Lothian staff, the birth was unusually rare. A combined weight of 16 pounds 13 ounces is extraordinary for twins and may be the heaviest set delivered in the region.

Today, Troy and Kaius are safe at home, surrounded by love, and already part of a remarkable family story their parents will never forget.
