Former Major League Baseball outfielder Gorkys Hernández is facing an unimaginable personal tragedy following the confirmation that his wife, Deisy María Tovar de Hernández, was among the victims of the powerful twin earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on June 24, 2026.

According to multiple reports, Deisy, aged 36, was staying at the luxury Hotel Eduard (also referred to as Hotel Eduards) in the coastal city of La Guaira—specifically in the Macuto area—where her husband’s Venezuelan league team, the Dolphins, was preparing for a game. The back-to-back earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude and occurring just seconds apart, caused the multi-story hotel to completely collapse, trapping numerous guests and staff beneath the rubble.

In an emotional tribute shared on Instagram on June 27, Hernández poured out his grief, describing Deisy as “the queen of my life”—the most beautiful, lovely, and precious woman in the world. He wrote that her love and memory would remain with him every single moment of every day, calling her his warrior and vowing to honor the dreams they had built together. The couple had married just six months earlier in December 2025.

Deisy leaves behind a young daughter, Vittoria Vasquez, from a previous relationship. Prior to official confirmation of her passing, she had been listed among the missing, leaving Hernández and her family in agonizing uncertainty for days. He had publicly urged the media and public not to spread unconfirmed rumors while rescue efforts continued.
