AUSSIE MUM LABELLED A “𝙼𝙾𝙽𝚂𝚃𝙴𝚁” AFTER CHOOSING LASER TREATMENT FOR HER SON’S BIRTHMARK

Brooke still remembers the sound of her baby boy crying as doctors carefully began a procedure she never imagined her son would need.

Unable to watch the tears and hear his cries, the Queensland mum stepped out of the treatment room, leaving her partner, Kewene, to comfort little Kingsley through the brief but emotional procedure.

“It only lasts two minutes,” Brooke recalled. “But for a parent, those two minutes feel like forever.”

Kingsley was born with a large port-wine stain covering the left side of his face. At first, Brooke believed it was simply a unique birthmark. But within hours of his birth, doctors became concerned and arranged a series of specialist examinations.

As Brooke recovered from her C-section, her newborn son underwent scans, eye examinations, and MRI imaging to determine what was causing the unusual mark.

Doctors later explained that Kingsley’s port-wine stain was linked to Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS), a rare condition involving abnormal blood vessels that can affect the brain and eyes.

The diagnosis changed everything.

While the birthmark itself was visible on his face, specialists warned the family that the condition could also increase the risk of neurological and vision-related complications. Kingsley’s left eye was already showing signs of glaucoma, requiring ongoing monitoring and treatment.

“My heart just sank,” Brooke said. “At first we weren’t worried about the birthmark itself. Then doctors started explaining everything that could come with it.”

Wanting to give their son the best possible chance, Brooke began searching for answers. Through online support groups, she connected with other parents who had faced similar journeys and learned about laser treatment that could help manage the condition when started early.

Because Kingsley’s birthmark sits close to his eye and could continue to change over time, doctors recommended beginning treatment while he was still an infant.

Watching her baby undergo the procedure was almost unbearable.

As soon as the laser treatment began, Brooke quietly left the room in tears.

“I felt terrible hearing him cry,” she admitted. “No parent wants to see their child uncomfortable.”

Just minutes later, the treatment was complete.

Although Kingsley’s face appeared swollen for a short time afterward, the family soon noticed encouraging changes as the birthmark became significantly lighter.

Hoping to share their experience and encourage other families facing similar diagnoses, Brooke posted Kingsley’s journey on social media.

Instead of receiving only support, however, she was met with criticism from strangers who wrongly assumed the treatment was performed only for cosmetic reasons.

The hurtful comments deeply affected her.

“People didn’t understand that this wasn’t about appearance,” Brooke explained. “Everything we have done has been based on medical advice and wanting the best future for our son.”

Rather than allowing the negativity to define their journey, Brooke chose to focus on raising Kingsley with confidence and pride.

“I never want him to feel ashamed of who he is,” she said. “I want him to know he’s perfect exactly as he is.”

As more families discovered Brooke’s story, messages of encouragement began pouring in from around the world. Parents of children with similar birthmarks thanked her for speaking openly and helping others feel less alone.

One particularly meaningful moment came when Kmart Australia asked permission to feature one of Kingsley’s photos while promoting a children’s outfit.

For Brooke, it represented far more than a clothing campaign.

“It made me so happy to see him included,” she said. “It showed children with visible differences that they belong too.”

Today, Kingsley continues to be monitored by specialists and is scheduled for additional laser treatments as part of his ongoing care.

The cheerful little boy continues reaching important milestones, and his parents remain hopeful as they look toward the future.

“For every negative comment,” Brooke said, “there are hundreds of people showing kindness. If sharing Kingsley’s story helps even one family feel less afraid, then every difficult moment has been worth it.”

Through courage, unconditional love, and unwavering determination, Brooke hopes her son’s journey reminds others that every child deserves to be seen not for their differences—but for the bright future that lies ahead.
