Doctors once feared Lucas might never leave the hospital.

But later this month, this brave little boy will celebrate his 4th birthday — a milestone his family once only dreamed of.

Lucas’ grandpa says he has the biggest personality. Though he is nonverbal, his family says he always finds a way to make himself understood.

He lights up around other children, adores his dog Blue, loves Goofy and Moana, and has a sense of style that is impossible to miss.

Lucas was born with an extremely rare genetic condition called epidermolysis bullosa, often known as Butterfly Disease. From the very beginning, his life has been filled with challenges most people could never imagine.

But Lucas has spent nearly four years showing everyone what strength truly looks like.

Just before Father’s Day, his family faced another heartbreaking scare when Lucas was found unresponsive after a nap. Thanks to the fast actions of first responders, he was airlifted to the hospital — and once again, Lucas began fighting.

He remains in a coma, but his family continues to believe in his recovery.

Before this happened, Lucas had been learning sign language and using a communication board to share exactly what he wanted to say.

His grandpa says their family learns something from Lucas every single day. And after hearing his story, it’s easy to understand why.
