BORN WITH A TUMOR BIGGER THAN HIS OWN HEAD, LITTLE OWEN DEFIED THE ODDS TO BECOME A HAPPY, MUSIC-LOVING TODDLER

At just 15 months old, Owen Lower already has the kind of personality that fills a room.
With his gravity-defying spiky hair, cheeky grin, and bright brown eyes, the Indiana toddler loves banging drumsticks, shaking maracas, and proudly clutching his tiny guitar while charming everyone around him.
But behind the playful smiles is a remarkable survival story that began long before he was even born.
Owen, from Noblesville, Indiana, was diagnosed during pregnancy with a massive cervical teratoma — an extremely rare tumor growing on his neck that doctors said was even larger than his own head.
The condition was so dangerous that it threatened to block his airway completely the moment he was delivered.

His devastated parents, Dustin Lower and Katy Preidt, were warned their unborn son faced life-threatening complications, including breathing obstruction, fluid buildup, poor growth, and even premature delivery.
“We tried not to search too much online because the images were terrifying,” Katy recalled. “But we knew immediately this was serious.”
Determined to save the baby boy, specialists at Riley Hospital for Children assembled a large multidisciplinary medical team months before Owen’s birth. Surgeons, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, and maternal-fetal experts worked together to create a carefully planned delivery designed to keep Owen alive from his very first breath.
Doctors knew there could be no mistakes.
During an emotional and highly complex delivery, Katy underwent a specialized partial cesarean section procedure that allowed surgeons to partially deliver Owen while he remained attached to the placenta.

The extra time gave doctors a critical opportunity to secure his airway before fully delivering him.
For Katy and Dustin, the terrifying moments that followed felt endless.
“One of the doctors squeezed my hand and told me Owen had survived,” Katy said. “That moment changed everything.”
But the journey was far from over.
Owen was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where he remained under constant monitoring as doctors prepared for the next major challenge — removing the enormous tumor from his neck.
The emotional toll on the family was overwhelming.

“We were so focused on surviving the delivery that we didn’t fully understand how hard the NICU experience would be,” Katy admitted. “Every monitor sound felt important.”
Still, the family says the compassion of the medical staff carried them through some of the darkest moments.
“The nurses and doctors treated us like family,” she said. “We will never forget their kindness.”
Once Owen became stable enough for surgery, doctors carefully removed the tumor in one complete piece during a delicate operation involving multiple specialists.
Remarkably, the surgery was a success.
“They removed it all at once,” Katy said. “We had incredible doctors, and we trusted them completely.”

Doctors later praised the calmness and strength shown by Owen’s parents throughout the ordeal.
“They had hope, but they also understood how fragile the situation was,” said Dr. Melinda Markham, medical director of Riley’s Fetal Center.
After weeks of recovery in the NICU, Owen slowly began growing stronger. His vibrant personality soon started shining through the medical equipment, tubes, and hospital routines.
Now home in Indiana, the once critically ill baby has transformed into an energetic toddler who loves dinosaurs, cars, Elmo, and making as much noise as possible with his toy instruments.
His older sister, Lyla, is said to adore him, even pretending to care for her dolls with toy “hospital equipment” inspired by her little brother’s journey.

Looking back, Owen’s parents say gratitude is the emotion that stays with them most.
“There was a point where I tried preparing my heart for losing him,” Katy admitted. “Now he fills our home with laughter every single day.”
Dustin added: “Our lives would never be the same without him.”
Today, Owen’s story stands as a powerful reminder of what determination, medical teamwork, and parental love can accomplish — and how a little boy once fighting simply to breathe is now thriving, laughing, and lighting up every room he enters.
