Doctors confirmed that baby McKenna experienced a serious head injury after being struck by a baseball.

Seven-week-old McKenna Hovenga was taken to the stadium by her mother, Kassy, ​​to watch her father play in the Waverly men’s baseball season. However, what was supposed to be a fun evening ended in tragedy when McKenna was airlifted from Shell Rock, Iowa, to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. There, doctors determined McKenna had a fractured skull and brain hemorrhage after being struck in the head by a baseball.

The accident occurred while McKenna’s father, Lee, was on the field and Kassy was sitting in the stands with her baby. Kassy was preparing to breastfeed when the ball suddenly hit her. “The baseball hit my shoulder. She didn’t react at first, but then there was a scream,” Kassy recounted. According to Ms. Kassy, ​​someone in the field attempted to throw the ball to third baseman, and it flew out of the gate, hitting Ms. Kassy and her baby.

Doctors are actively treating McKenna. “Things are stable now. She no longer has significant brain bleeding; it’s just blood clots putting pressure on her brain, causing seizures,” Ms. Kassy said. Being a first-time mother, and having gone through three IVF cycles over three long years to conceive McKenna, this horrific accident has deeply traumatized Ms. Kassy.

Now, McKenna suffers daily seizures, some lasting up to nine minutes. Doctors say they are still trying to treat her. Recently, Kassy happily shared that McKenna had gone 48 hours without a seizure. However, her body is swollen due to fluid retention, which is a normal situation, and doctors are working to resolve it gradually. CT scans show that some areas of the brain are still damaged, and she has not yet woken up despite being out of critical condition.
