BABY GIRL RECEIVES LIFE-CHANGING COCHLEAR IMPLANTS AT JUST NINE MONTHS OLD — GRACE IS ABOUT TO HEAR HER PARENTS’ VOICES FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME

When baby Grace entered the world, her parents couldn’t have imagined that one of the biggest milestones in her life would be hearing their voices for the very first time.

Shortly after she was born, Grace did not pass her newborn hearing screening. Further testing confirmed that she had severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears, leaving her family searching for the best path forward.

Determined to give their daughter every opportunity to experience the world around her, Grace’s parents worked closely with specialists at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. A dedicated team of audiologists, speech therapists, and ear, nose and throat experts carefully monitored her progress and developed a treatment plan tailored to her needs.

Grace first tried traditional hearing aids, but they provided only limited benefit. After months of careful evaluation and many conversations with her family, the medical team recommended bilateral cochlear implants.

At just nine months old, Grace became one of the first children to receive the procedure through Nationwide Children’s ENT practice in Toledo—an important milestone for both the hospital and her family.

Now, another unforgettable moment is just around the corner.

In the weeks following surgery, cochlear implant recipients return for what specialists lovingly call “Activation Day.” During this appointment, the hearing devices are switched on and carefully adjusted to match each child’s individual hearing needs.

For many families, it’s an emotional milestone—the first time a child is able to clearly hear the voices of the people who have loved them since the day they were born.

Grace’s mother says the family couldn’t be more grateful for the care they have received.

“We love Nationwide Children’s,” she shared. “We loved the care we received from Dr. Malhotra and Grace’s audiologist, Gina. We are looking forward to her activation day.”

For Grace, that special day represents far more than a medical appointment. It marks the beginning of a new chapter filled with sounds she has never experienced before—her parents’ gentle voices, laughter at home, music, and the everyday moments many people take for granted.

As her family eagerly counts down to Activation Day, they are filled with hope that Grace’s world is about to become a little brighter—one beautiful sound at a time.
