A terrifying predator is making headlines after marine scientists tracked a nearly 12-foot mako shark believed to be responsible for a series of devastating attacks in the waters off Long Island, New York.

The giant shark—nicknamed “Sharkzilla”—has been linked to enormous bite wounds found on a humpback whale, a gray seal, and even a 400-pound tuna. The size of the injuries immediately raised alarms, with experts saying only an exceptionally large and powerful predator could have inflicted such damage.

As investigators searched for answers, an extraordinary theory emerged. Because thousands of barrels of nuclear waste were dumped decades ago in the nearby Hudson Canyon, some wondered whether radioactive exposure could have created an unusually large or aggressive “mutant” shark.

Marine scientist Craig O’Connell launched an urgent mission to locate the animal, attach a tracking tag, and collect tissue samples before the mystery grew even larger.

But when laboratory testing was completed, the results told a different story.

Scientists found no evidence of radioactive mutations. Instead, they believe Sharkzilla is a massive pregnant female shortfin mako shark, whose aggressive hunting behavior is likely driven by the need to feed her developing pups.

Even so, the discovery has revealed something equally remarkable.

Researchers now believe some of the Atlantic’s largest mako sharks may be returning to waters off New York after decades of decline, suggesting the region could once again become a breeding and hunting ground for some of the ocean’s fastest and most formidable predators.

While the “mutant shark” theory has been ruled out, the appearance of a predator this large has reignited fascination—and concern—about what may still be swimming beneath the surface of the Atlantic.
