SHE LOOKED AT THE SUNSET… AND SAW HER SON. DAYS AFTER BURYING WILL, HIS MOM REVEALS THE HEARTBREAK NO MOTHER SHOULD EVER HAVE TO CARRY
Ever since 15-year-old Will Roberts was laid to rest, people have been asking the same heartbreaking question:
How is his family doing?
The truth is… there may be no words big enough to describe what they are living through right now.
Will’s mother, Brittney, recently shared a photograph.
To most of us, it would simply be a beautiful sunset.
But to Brittney…
it was Will.
For years, Will loved photographing sunrises and sunsets. Even while fighting bone cancer, he found beauty in the sky.
And years ago, after the family lost their daughter Darby Kate, Brittney would tell Will that his sister painted beautiful pictures across the sky to let them know she was still with them.
Now Will is gone too.
And Brittney believes something almost unbearably beautiful:
Will and Darby Kate are painting those skies together.
“Will is everywhere we are,” she wrote.
“Now he and Darby Kate together paint us beautiful skies.”
Read that again.
A mother who just buried her 15-year-old son is looking toward the sky and trying to find him there.
But then came the words that revealed just how deep her pain really is.
Brittney opened her heart and admitted that she is struggling with a fear that no parent should ever have to know:
the fear of losing her last child.
Charlie is now the only child still here with Jason and Brittney.
And after losing Will—and having already endured the unimaginable loss of Darby Kate—Brittney says that fear has become something she carries every day.
She prayed for God to wrap His arms around Charlie.
To protect her.
To keep her safe.
To give their family the strength to keep going when their hearts are already exhausted from losing so much.
Imagine being a mother…
Having to bury your child…
Then going home to a room that is suddenly quieter.
A chair that is suddenly empty.
A phone that will never light up with his name again.
And then looking at your youngest child and realizing just how fragile life can feel.
Yet somehow, Brittney keeps moving forward.
Not because the pain is gone.
Not because she has stopped missing Will.
But because Will would want his family to keep going.
He taught them to believe in Faith, Not Fear.
And now his family is trying to live those words without him.
So if you have been thinking about Will…
If his story touched your heart…
If you followed his battle, prayed for him, or simply admired the courage of a teenager who fought so hard…
Please don’t forget the family he left behind.
The funeral is over.
The flowers will eventually fade.
The crowds will eventually go home.
But grief doesn’t end when the burial does.
Sometimes, that’s when the hardest days begin.
So tonight, when you see a beautiful sunset, look a little closer. Maybe you’ll understand what Brittney sees. Maybe somewhere in those colors, she sees Will and Darby Kate reminding her that love is still there—still surrounding her family, still shining through the darkness, and still refusing to disappear.
Please keep Jason, Brittney, Charlie, and everyone who loved Will in your prayers. They don’t need us to forget their pain. They need us to remember their son.
