An 11-year-old girl has been found dead in a river in Scotland, police have confirmed to PEOPLE.After receiving reports of concern about the girl, emergency services arrived at Gore Glen Woodland Park, about 10 miles south of the capital Edinburgh, at around 12:40 p.m. local time on Thursday, Aug. 6, Police Scotland said.

At about 4:25 p.m., responders found her body in Gore Water, a small river that runs through the popular scenic spot, near the Shank Bridge, police told PEOPLE.

Officers added to PEOPLE that the preteen’s death is being treated as “unexplained” as inquiries continue, and that her family has been made aware of her death. Her identity has not been released.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service told PEOPLE that it sent two vehicles to the incident to support the rescue efforts and crews left “after ensuring the area was safe.”

Two ambulances, a special operations team and a critical care paramedic also attended, the Scottish Ambulance Service told PEOPLE.

According to the Edinburgh Evening News, traffic was diverted away from the scene, while police also closed access points to the park during the search.

The newspaper also reported that emergency services could be seen on the Shank Bridge, part of the major A7 road that connects Edinburgh with England.

Following the girl’s death, locals left tributes at the bridge, while local councilwoman Ellen Scott said, via Edinburgh Live, “This is a great tragedy for all the family and my thoughts and prayers are with them at this devastating time.”
