Scottish Mother Sentenced to Six Years After Baby Dies From Hair Dryer Heat Exposure

A 28-year-old Scottish mother has been sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of culpable homicide in connection with the death of her 13-week-old daughter, Dahlia-Rose.

Courtney Gartshore, from Peterhead, Scotland, was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh on August 14, 2026, following the tragic incident in September 2023.

The court heard that the infant had been exposed to intense and prolonged heat from a hair dryer, resulting in severe injuries. The circumstances surrounding the baby’s death shocked those involved in the case and led to a serious criminal investigation.

Gartshore was ultimately convicted of culpable homicide, the Scottish legal offense covering an unlawful killing where the circumstances do not amount to murder.

During sentencing, Judge Simon Collins KC described the case as “uniquely disturbing”, emphasizing the seriousness of what had happened to the infant.

The judge also characterized the incident as a grave violation of what he described as a mother’s fundamental duty to protect her child.

Dahlia-Rose was only 13 weeks old when she died, making the case particularly heartbreaking for those who followed the proceedings.

The six-year prison sentence marks the conclusion of a case that has left the child’s death at the center of a deeply disturbing set of circumstances.

For Dahlia-Rose’s loved ones, however, the legal proceedings cannot undo the loss of a baby whose life ended after only a few months.
