FIVE BOYS, ALL 17 — ONE NIGHT THAT ENDED FIVE YOUNG LIVES

They were only 17 years old — five teenagers with friendships, families and futures that had barely begun.

Late Saturday night in Grand Junction, Colorado, the vehicle carrying them left Lookout Lane and plunged down a steep hillside.

By the time emergency responders reached the wreckage the following morning, it was already too late.

All five boys had died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The victims were identified as:

Tristan Tucker

William Simms

Tyler Kersey-Huffman

Titus Gould

Braden Taylor

All five were 17 years old and from the Grand Junction community.

Their identities were initially withheld because they were minors, before authorities and local reporting later confirmed their names.

 THE CRASH WASN’T DISCOVERED UNTIL MORNING

Police received a report at approximately 7:45 a.m. Sunday, hours after the vehicle had gone off the roadway.

Responders located the wrecked vehicle down the steep hillside near Lookout Lane.

Investigators say the vehicle had been traveling south when it veered off the road.

Speed is being considered as a possible contributing factor, but the investigation remains ongoing.

TWO TEENS WERE EJECTED

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office said three of the teenagers, including the driver and front-seat passenger, were wearing seat belts.

The other two were not restrained and were ejected from the vehicle during the crash.

But many questions about exactly why the vehicle left the roadway remain unanswered.

 A COMMUNITY ENTERING A NEW SCHOOL YEAR IN MOURNING

The tragedy came just as students were preparing to return to school.

Local schools and community organizations have made grief support available to students and staff affected by the deaths.

Fundraisers have also been established to help several of the families with unexpected expenses following the tragedy.

For classmates and friends, the beginning of a new school year now carries an unimaginable absence.

Five seats will be empty.

Five families will wake up to a reality they never expected.

Investigators are still working to reconstruct the final moments before the crash.

Was speed the decisive factor?

Did something else cause the vehicle to leave the road?
