NO WAY OUT: JAMIE VARLEY BEGINS A LIFE SENTENCE BEHIND PRISON WALLS
Jamie Varley has begun serving one of the most severe sentences available in England and Wales after being convicted of murdering 13-month-old Preston Davey.
The former teacher, 37, was handed a whole-life order, meaning he will remain in prison for the rest of his life and will not be eligible for ordinary parole.
WHAT REALLY HAPPENED AFTER SENTENCING?
Since Varley entered prison, dramatic claims have circulated online alleging that he was attacked, placed in solitary confinement and targeted by other inmates.
But those claims need to be separated from the verified facts.
In July, Full Fact reported that the Ministry of Justice confirmed Varley had not been attacked, contradicting social-media claims that he had been stabbed in prison.
There is likewise no reliable public confirmation of a secret inmate “manhunt” or leaked messages threatening him.
WHAT IS CONFIRMED?
What is confirmed is the extraordinary seriousness of Varley’s conviction.
A seven-week trial found him guilty of murdering and sexually abusing Preston, as well as serious assault, child cruelty and offences involving indecent images of a child.
The prosecution evidence described more than 40 traumatic injuries suffered by Preston during the months he was in Varley’s care.
The judge ultimately imposed a whole-life order, describing the case as one of the most extreme examples warranting that sentence.
PRESTON’S STORY SHOULD NOT DISAPPEAR
The intense online focus on what might happen to Varley in prison risks overshadowing the person at the centre of the case.
Preston was only 13 months old.
He had been placed with Varley and his partner as part of an adoption process. Within months, prosecutors said he had suffered repeated physical and sexual abuse before his death.
The case has also triggered wider questions about safeguarding and whether warning signs were missed.
An independent safeguarding review is examining how Preston’s welfare was handled before his death.
WHAT HAPPENS TO VARLEY NOW?
There is no ordinary release date waiting for him.
His whole-life order means that, barring exceptional legal circumstances, his life will be spent behind bars.
Claims about prison retaliation may generate headlines, but the confirmed reality is already stark enough:
A WHOLE-LIFE ORDER.
NO ORDINARY PAROLE.
A 13-MONTH-OLD CHILD WHO LOST HIS LIFE.
AND A SAFEGUARDING REVIEW THAT MAY STILL REVEAL HOW EARLIER WARNING SIGNS WERE HANDLED.
The prison rumours remain unverified.
The sentence does not.
