HUMAN REMAINS FOUND NEAR PALOMAR MOUNTAIN AS SEARCH FOR MISSING CALIFORNIA MOM CONTINUES
SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — A disturbing discovery near Palomar Mountain has added a new layer of uncertainty to the search for missing California mother Angelica Brophy, but authorities say the human remains found in the area are not believed to belong to her.
The remains were discovered Wednesday, August 12, by a search-and-rescue volunteer in an embankment in Pauma Valley, an area between Valley Center and Palomar Mountain.
The location is significant because Brophy was last known to have entered Palomar Mountain State Park on July 6—the day she disappeared.
A DISCOVERY THAT IMMEDIATELY RAISED QUESTIONS
Brophy, 44, is an emergency-room nurse and mother of two from Oceanside.
Investigators say she was seen at Harrah’s Resort Southern California at approximately 3:30 p.m. on July 6.
Roughly 50 minutes later, she entered Palomar Mountain State Park alone after purchasing a parking pass.
Later that evening, she failed to pick up her daughter from summer camp.
A missing-person report was filed with Oceanside police at approximately 9:30 p.m.
Three days later, on July 9, Brophy’s vehicle was discovered abandoned in the park’s Doane Pond parking lot.
But Brophy was nowhere to be found.
SEARCH TEAMS SCOURED THE MOUNTAIN
Authorities conducted extensive searches of the rugged mountain terrain.
Search teams used dogs, drones and other resources while investigators examined the area surrounding Brophy’s abandoned vehicle.
Despite those efforts, she remained missing.
The discovery of human remains more than a month later therefore immediately attracted attention.
But the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office has emphasized that investigators currently believe the remains are not those of Brophy.
INVESTIGATORS ARE NOW EXAMINING THE REMAINS
The Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation into the death associated with the remains.
The county medical examiner is expected to determine the person’s identity as well as the cause and manner of death.
Officials have cautioned that determining those facts could take time.
Authorities have also said there is no known threat to the community associated with the discovery.
BROPHY’S FAMILY IS STILL WAITING FOR ANSWERS
For Brophy’s family, the discovery brought an especially difficult moment.
Her relatives were notified that the remains were not believed to be those of Angelica.
The family has continued searching for her and asking the public to come forward with any information that could help investigators locate her.
Her brother Ramon Fabregas previously expressed the family’s frustration with the lack of answers, saying they need even a small piece of information that could help lead them to Angelica.
HER CAR REMAINS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE TIMELINE
Brophy’s abandoned Hyundai Kona was found inside Palomar Mountain State Park several days after she disappeared.
Investigators reportedly found personal belongings inside the vehicle, including her phone, wallet, passport and other items.
The fact that her vehicle remained behind while Brophy disappeared has become one of the key unanswered elements of the investigation.
Authorities have previously said they found no evidence of foul play in the investigation, while continuing to pursue multiple leads.
THE BIG QUESTION REMAINS
The discovery of human remains might appear to represent a major development because of the location.
But investigators are drawing a clear line between the two cases.
The remains have not been identified as Angelica Brophy, and authorities currently believe they are unrelated to her disappearance.
That means the search for the missing mother continues.
More than a month after Brophy vanished, her family is still waiting for the one piece of information that could change everything:
Where is Angelica Brophy?
Anyone with information that could help locate Brophy is being urged to contact Oceanside Police Detective Ryan Malone at 760-435-4537.
This report distinguishes confirmed information from speculation. The identity of the recently discovered remains has not been publicly established, and authorities have not linked them to Brophy’s disappearance
