NEW FORENSIC EVIDENCE SHEDS LIGHT ON LITTLE PRESTON DAVEY’S FINAL WEEKS — AND THE TIMELINE IS DISTURBING
LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND — New details from the Preston Davey case have brought renewed attention to the medical and digital evidence used to reconstruct the final months of the 13-month-old boy’s life.
According to prosecutors, Preston suffered 40 traumatic injuries before his death. A post-mortem examination concluded that he died from acute upper-airway obstruction, rather than the drowning initially claimed by Jamie Varley.
THE INJURIES TELL A LARGER STORY
The medical evidence was considered alongside photographs, videos and messages recovered from Varley’s phone.
Police said some of the digital material showed injuries on Preston and helped investigators establish what was happening during the months he was in the couple’s care. Other footage documented incidents that prosecutors argued demonstrated a pattern of mistreatment.
The evidence became particularly significant because investigators were not looking at one isolated incident—they were reconstructing Preston’s final months.
DIGITAL RECORDS BECAME CRUCIAL
Among the evidence described publicly were videos of Preston being subjected to distressing treatment, records of medical episodes and communications between Varley and his partner.
Investigators also examined a video that Varley allegedly used to explain bruising found on Preston. Police later determined that the footage had been recorded 12 days earlier, meaning it did not explain the injury in question.
WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE HIS DEATH?
On July 27, 2023, Preston was taken to hospital unconscious and in cardiac arrest.
Varley reportedly told medical staff that he had left Preston in the bathtub and later found him submerged.
But investigators said Preston was completely dry, while the post-mortem ultimately identified acute upper-airway obstruction as his cause of death.
That medical finding became a central part of the prosecution case.
THE CASE HAS ALREADY ENDED IN CONVICTIONS
One important correction to the wording of the original post: this is no longer an ongoing prosecution against Varley.
Jamie Varley was convicted of murder and multiple child-cruelty and sexual offenses in June 2026. He was subsequently given a whole-life order, meaning he will remain imprisoned for the rest of his life with no eligibility for parole.
His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, was convicted of causing or allowing Preston’s death along with other offenses and received a 25-year sentence.
THE TIMELINE MATTERS
The evidence presented in court ultimately showed prosecutors were not relying solely on what happened during Preston’s final medical emergency.
They built their case around months of medical findings, digital evidence, messages and video footage.
And at the center of it all was a 13-month-old boy whose final months were reconstructed piece by piece after he could no longer tell anyone what had happened.
Preston’s story was ultimately told through the evidence left behind.
