HUMAN REMAINS FOUND JUST 15 MILES FROM NANCY GUTHRIE’S HOME — BUT POLICE SAY THERE’S NO LINK TO HER CASE

Sheriff vehicles on a dirt hill with cacti.TUCSON, ARIZONA — Human remains have been discovered in a desert area roughly 15 miles from the home of missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, immediately drawing attention amid the months-long investigation into her disappearance.

But authorities are urging the public not to assume the remains belong to Guthrie.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said the remains were found near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard and appeared to have been at the location for an extended period.

 “NO INDICATION” THEY ARE CONNECTED

Despite the proximity to Guthrie’s home, the sheriff’s department said:

“At this time, there is no indication they are connected to the Nancy Guthrie investigation.”

Search-and-rescue deputies responded to the desert location as investigators began examining the discovery. Officials have not publicly identified the remains or explained who initially found them.

THE DISCOVERY COMES MONTHS INTO THE SEARCH

Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her Tucson-area home after she was last seen on January 31.

Investigators have treated the disappearance as an apparent abduction and have continued examining forensic evidence, surveillance footage and other leads.

Authorities have also released ransom notes connected to the case while continuing to seek information that could help determine what happened to Nancy.

 A CRITICAL DISTINCTION

The discovery is certainly significant—but there is currently no public evidence establishing that the remains are Nancy Guthrie’s.

Authorities’ preliminary statement is the opposite: there is no indication of a connection at this time.

That could change if forensic testing identifies the remains or investigators uncover evidence linking the location to Guthrie’s disappearance.

For now, two investigations should be treated separately.

For Nancy’s family, the discovery may bring renewed questions, but not answers.

Until authorities identify the remains and establish a connection, it would be premature to conclude that they belong to Nancy Guthrie.

The investigation remains active.
