ALL WE WANT TO KNOW IS WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR SON”: NOLAN WELLS’ PARENTS FACE HIS 19TH BIRTHDAY WITHOUT ANSWERS
BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI — Instead of celebrating their son’s 19th birthday, Nolan Wells’ parents are preparing to mark the milestone without him—and demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Nolan would have turned 19 on Wednesday, August 19. A prayer rally is planned in Biloxi to honor his life as his family continues calling for a deeper investigation into what happened to the young college football player.
For his parents, Christine Wonsley and Elmore Wonsley, the birthday represents another painful milestone in a case that remains unresolved more than a month after their son disappeared.
A FOURTH OF JULY TRIP THAT ENDED IN TRAGEDY
Nolan, an 18-year-old student-athlete from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, traveled to Horn Island with friends on July 4 for an Independence Day gathering.
He was last seen on the island that afternoon.
His body was discovered in the water near Horn Island on July 6, two days after he disappeared. Authorities initially suspected drowning and said there was no evidence of foul play, but the investigation has remained open.
The circumstances surrounding Nolan’s final hours remain the central unanswered question.
HIS PARENTS SAY THEY STILL DON’T HAVE THE ANSWERS
At the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Atlanta, Nolan’s parents publicly described their continuing struggle to understand how their son died.
Their message has been consistent: they want transparency and a thorough investigation.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, along with Rev. Al Sharpton and other civil rights leaders, has joined the family in calling for additional scrutiny of the case. The NAACP’s Office of General Counsel has also joined the legal team advocating for a thorough investigation.
The Congressional Black Caucus has separately urged a federal review.
THE AUTOPSY HAS NOT PROVIDED A FINAL ANSWER
One of the biggest unresolved issues is Nolan’s cause and manner of death.
An independent autopsy commissioned by his family concluded that the cause and manner of death were undetermined, while the official state autopsy has been completed but its findings remain sealed pending grand-jury review.
That uncertainty has fueled the family’s concerns.
Authorities have not announced that Nolan was killed, and investigators have not publicly identified anyone as a suspect in his death.
HIS PHONE HAS ALSO BECOME A KEY POINT OF CONTENTION
Nolan’s cellphone is another major unanswered question.
The device has not yet undergone the forensic examination his family believes could help establish what happened during his final hours. The family’s attorneys say they are prepared to participate in a joint forensic examination, potentially involving federal investigators, while a dispute remains over how the phone should be transferred and analyzed.
That phone could potentially contain messages, photographs, location information or other digital evidence relevant to the timeline.
NOW HIS 19TH BIRTHDAY IS HERE
Nolan’s family should be planning a birthday celebration.
Instead, they are gathering supporters in Biloxi to remember a young man whose life was cut short and to continue asking the same question they have asked since July:
What happened to Nolan Wells?
His 19th birthday is not simply another date on the calendar.
For his parents, it is a painful reminder of everything Nolan should have experienced—but never will.
And until investigators establish how he died, his family says they will continue pushing for answers.
“We just want honesty and transparency. We want a thorough investigation.”
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not determined that Nolan’s death was a homicide, and no one has been charged in connection with his death.
