MISSING BRITISH SOLDIER, 22, FOUND DEAD IN RIVER AFTER NIGHT OUT AS POLICE INVESTIGATE CRASH
WYLAM, NORTHUMBERLAND — The search for a missing 22-year-old British soldier has ended in tragedy after police found a body in the River Tyne near the location where he was last seen.
Liam Potts, a soldier serving with the Coldstream Guards, disappeared after a night out with friends in the Northumberland village of Wylam.
Police said he was last seen at approximately 12:20 a.m. Saturday, heading into Wylam from Wylam Bridge.
His family and friends quickly joined an extensive search after he failed to return home the following morning.
BODY DISCOVERED IN THE RIVER TYNE
Specialist officers from Northumbria Police’s Marine Unit made the discovery in the River Tyne close to Wylam Bridge.
The grim find came after days of searching the area where Liam was last known to have been.
Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Robson described the development as “extremely sad” and offered condolences to Liam’s family and friends.
Police also asked the public to respect the family’s privacy as they cope with the devastating news.
POLICE HAD ALREADY BEEN INVESTIGATING A CRASH
Liam’s disappearance had raised additional questions because a serious road incident occurred on Wylam Bridge around the time he was believed to be there.
Police said a car was thought to have crashed into a group of pedestrians, seriously injuring a man and woman, both in their 20s.
Liam was reportedly on the bridge at the time, but authorities said he was not inside the vehicle and did not believe he had been injured in the crash.
Two men, aged 22 and 23, were arrested in connection with the collision and later released on bail.
A SOLDIER WHO NEVER MADE IT HOME
Liam was described by police as approximately 6 feet 3 inches tall, with a medium build, dark hair and tattoos on his right arm.
When he was last seen, he was wearing black joggers, black Nike trainers, a black T-shirt with white writing and a diamond-shaped logo on the back, along with a gold chain.
He had been on leave from his duties with the Coldstream Guards.
A FAMILY’S SEARCH ENDS IN HEARTBREAK
For Liam’s relatives and friends, the discovery brings an end to an anxious search but leaves a family facing an unbearable loss.
Investigators have not publicly established the circumstances surrounding his death, and the discovery of his body does not by itself indicate that anyone else was responsible.
The earlier crash remains part of the wider circumstances police are examining.
As the investigation continues, authorities are asking people who may have information about Liam’s final movements to assist investigators.
A young soldier went out with friends, disappeared during the early hours of Saturday morning, and was found days later in the River Tyne. Now, his family is left waiting for answers about what happened during those final hours.
