MISSING WOMAN’S CAR FOUND HIDDEN DOWN EMBANKMENT — BODY DISCOVERED AFTER WEEKS-LONG SEARCH

NORTH YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND — A desperate search for a missing 57-year-old woman has ended in tragedy after a member of the public spotted a crashed car hidden deep in undergrowth nearly a month after she disappeared.

Tracey Smith, from the Stokesley area, was last seen on July 24, when she left her home driving a black Fiat Panda. Her disappearance prompted an extensive search and appeals for members of the public to watch for her vehicle.

Earlier this week, North Yorkshire Police specifically asked runners, cyclists, hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts to keep an eye out for Tracey’s black Fiat Panda.

Investigators believed locating the car could be crucial to understanding what happened after she disappeared.

Then, on the evening of August 18, a member of the public noticed a black vehicle concealed in vegetation down an embankment on the A172 near Cleveland Tontine, close to its junction with the A19.

Police were called to the scene.

Inside the vehicle, they discovered the driver deceased.

Authorities have not yet formally identified the deceased.

However, North Yorkshire Police said officers believe the woman found inside the vehicle is Tracey Smith.

The location of the car reportedly made the recovery and forensic examination particularly difficult. Police closed the road for much of the following day while investigators examined the scene and recovered the vehicle.

For Tracey’s loved ones, the discovery brings devastating news after weeks of uncertainty.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE ROAD?

That remains one of the central questions.

Police have launched an investigation into how Tracey’s car left the roadway and ended up down the embankment.

At this stage, authorities have not publicly established exactly when the crash occurred or why the vehicle left the A172.

The fact that the car was concealed by undergrowth appears to have made it extremely difficult to spot from the road.

The eventual discovery came only after police had appealed directly to people who regularly travel through the surrounding countryside.

A SEARCH THAT LASTED ALMOST A MONTH

Tracey disappeared on July 24.

For weeks, police and members of the public searched for clues about where she and her vehicle might have gone.

Earlier CCTV footage showed Tracey driving away from her home on the day she vanished, while investigators considered several possible areas where her car could have been located, including remote parts of North Yorkshire and the surrounding countryside.

The discovery of the vehicle has now given investigators a physical location to examine.

But many questions remain unanswered.

HER FAMILY NOW FACES THE HARDEST NEWS

Police have expressed their condolences to Tracey’s family and friends and thanked members of the public who responded to the appeals — particularly the person who noticed the vehicle and alerted authorities.

After weeks of hoping for Tracey’s safe return, her loved ones are now facing the possibility that the search has ended in the worst possible way.

The formal identification process remains outstanding.

Meanwhile, investigators will continue examining the crash scene to determine what happened.

A woman disappeared without a trace. Her car remained hidden just yards from a road used by the public. Nearly a month later, one passing motorist finally spotted it — revealing a tragedy that had remained hidden in the undergrowth.

Police believe the deceased is Tracey Smith, but formal identification is still pending. The investigation into how the vehicle left the road is ongoing.
