FBI RELEASES NEW IMAGES OF ARMED FIGURE IN NANCY GUTHRIE DISAPPEARANCE

TUCSON, ARIZONA — The investigation into the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, took a dramatic turn after federal authorities released surveillance images showing a masked, armed individual outside her Arizona home.

Nancy was last seen at her Tucson-area residence on the night of January 31, 2026, and was reported missing the following day. Authorities have said they believe she was abducted.

A MASKED FIGURE AT HER FRONT DOOR

The FBI released images showing a person wearing a full-face mask, dark clothing and gloves, carrying a backpack and apparently armed.

Investigators said the individual appeared to approach Nancy’s home and attempt to interfere with the doorbell camera.

According to FBI Director Kash Patel, authorities were able to recover previously inaccessible footage from backend systems associated with the home’s security equipment. The images became some of the most significant pieces of evidence publicly released in the case.

The footage reportedly showed the individual attempting to disable or obstruct the camera before the disappearance.

THE SUSPECT MAY HAVE BEEN AT THE HOUSE BEFORE NANCY VANISHED

Investigators later released another image that raised an even more troubling possibility.

Sources told ABC News that the person captured by the Nest doorbell camera appeared to have visited Nancy’s home before the suspected abduction.

That earlier appearance has become an important part of the investigation because it suggests the person may have been familiar with the property or may have been monitoring the residence. Authorities have not publicly identified the individual.

Police have emphasized that the images show a potential subject, not a publicly identified or charged suspect.

WHAT INVESTIGATORS KNOW

Authorities have described the person seen in the surveillance footage as a male of average build, with a black mustache and an estimated height of around 5 feet 9 inches.

He was also seen carrying an Ozark Trail Hiker Pack.

Investigators have asked the public to examine their own security-camera footage and report anything that might help identify the individual or establish his movements around the time Nancy disappeared.

The FBI has also increased the reward connected to information leading to answers in the case.

NANCY’S DISAPPEARANCE

Nancy had spent time with family before she vanished.

She was last seen after returning home following dinner with her daughter Annie Guthrie and son-in-law. When she failed to appear for a scheduled virtual church service the next morning, concerns grew quickly.

Authorities eventually determined that circumstances surrounding her disappearance were suspicious and began treating the residence as a crime scene.

Despite extensive searches and investigative efforts, Nancy has not been located.

RANSOM NOTES ADDED ANOTHER LAYER TO THE MYSTERY

Months into the investigation, authorities also released the contents of two ransom notes that had been sent to Nancy’s family.

One demanded $4 million in Bitcoin in exchange for her return.

Another message claimed Nancy had died and had been buried somewhere in nature.

Investigators have continued examining the authenticity and significance of those communications rather than treating every claim in the messages as established fact.

The case has therefore produced a disturbing combination of surveillance footage, alleged ransom demands and very little physical evidence publicly available about Nancy’s whereabouts.

A CASE STILL WITHOUT A SUSPECT

More than six months after Nancy disappeared, authorities have still not publicly identified anyone as responsible for her disappearance.

Even recent discoveries have failed to provide the answer Nancy’s family desperately needs. Human remains found in a desert area roughly 15 miles from her home in August were determined not to be connected to her case.

That leaves investigators focused on the surveillance evidence and the search for the unidentified person seen near Nancy’s home.

For Savannah Guthrie and the rest of Nancy’s family, the uncertainty has continued for months.

An elderly woman vanished from her own home.

A masked figure was captured on camera.

And investigators are still trying to determine who that person was — and what happened to Nancy.

Until Nancy is found, the most important piece of the mystery remains unanswered:
