EIGHT DAYS OF HOPE ENDED IN HEARTBREAK: LILY HOOPER FOUND DEAD IN REMOTE AUSTRALIAN BUSHLAND
For eight days, Lily Hooper’s family waited for one piece of news they desperately wanted to hear:
Bring Lily home.
The 18-year-old experienced bushwalker disappeared on August 12 after leaving her home in Oakdale, New South Wales, for a solo hike in Nattai National Park.
Her car was later found near the Bonnum Pic Walking Trail, triggering a massive multi-agency search through some of the region’s most difficult terrain. Nearly 1,000 people were involved in the search over its duration, including police, SES volunteers, Defence Force personnel and specialist rescue teams.
On Thursday morning, an SES searcher finally located Lily in thick, remote bushland.
But then came an agonizing communication failure.
Searchers initially reported that the missing teenager had been found alive.
That information reached Lily’s family.
For approximately eight to ten minutes, her parents believed their daughter had survived.
Then the devastating truth was confirmed.
Lily had been found deceased.
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon later issued an unreserved apology to Lily’s family, acknowledging the additional trauma caused by the miscommunication.
NSW Premier Chris Minns had also initially announced in Parliament that Lily had been found alive before receiving the corrected information and apologizing. An investigation into the communication breakdown is now expected.
THE SEARCH HAD BEEN RELENTLESS
Teams had spent days combing through dense vegetation, steep ravines and dangerous cliff lines.
Almost 100 Australian Defence Force personnel joined the operation during its final stages, while hundreds of SES volunteers and other emergency workers continued searching day and night.
Lily’s family had remained close to the search command post throughout the ordeal.
They had thanked every volunteer and emergency worker who helped look for her while repeatedly asking the public to stay out of the dangerous terrain.
They only wanted their daughter home.
NOW, QUESTIONS REMAIN
Authorities have not publicly established a cause of death, and a report will be prepared for the coroner. Police have not publicly indicated that foul play is suspected.
For Lily’s loved ones, however, the investigation comes after eight days of unimaginable uncertainty.
She left home for a hike.
Her family waited.
Hundreds searched.
And when Lily was finally found, her parents were given a brief moment of hope before learning the heartbreaking truth.
She was only 18.
Eight days of searching ended with her finally being brought home — but not in the way anyone had prayed.
The circumstances surrounding Lily Hooper’s death remain under investigation. A coroner’s report is expected.
