Jennifer Tse had celebrated her father’s birthday many times before. This year, there was no birthday gathering, no chance to speak to him and no familiar figure behind the sunglasses that had become part of his public image.

Instead, she marked what would have been veteran Hong Kong actor Patrick Tse’s 90th birthday with memories.

“Happy Birthday, Daddy,” Jennifer wrote in an emotional tribute, adding that she and the family missed him deeply. The message came only weeks after Patrick’s death in July at the age of 89.

For the 43-year-old actress and model, the post was not simply a public acknowledgment of a famous father. It was a daughter trying to put into words what it meant to say goodbye.

Patrick would have turned 90 on Aug. 9.

The following day, Aug. 10, Jennifer shared a collection of photographs on social media. Some reached back into her childhood, while others captured Patrick with his family during happier years.

Her message made that distinction painfully clear.

“I really, really miss you,” she wrote.

Patrick’s memorial tablet bears his name, Tse Ka Yuk, along with his birth and death years and a reference to his ancestral home in Panyu, Guangdong province.

But one detail makes the memorial unmistakably his.

The portrait chosen for the tablet shows Patrick dressed in a black-and-white suit. He is smiling.

And, fittingly, he is wearing sunglasses.

It is the same signature detail Jennifer had gently invoked in her birthday message — transforming an accessory associated with his public persona into something unexpectedly tender.

A Daughter’s Goodbye

Grief often becomes especially sharp around familiar dates.
