More than six weeks after a 44-year-old California emergency-room nurse vanished, the discovery of human remains near the same mountain where her abandoned vehicle was found has added another disturbing twist to a case that remains unsolved.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — The search for Angelica Brophy has taken another heartbreaking turn.

Brophy, a 44-year-old mother of two and emergency-room nurse from Oceanside, has been missing since July 6, 2026. Her vehicle was discovered three days later at Palomar Mountain State Park, the same area where investigators believe she went hiking.

Then, on August 12, a volunteer search-and-rescue team discovered human remains less than three miles from the entrance to the park.

For a moment, the discovery raised the possibility that investigators had finally found the missing woman.

But authorities quickly delivered a different answer:

The remains are not believed to be Angelica Brophy.

THE LAST KNOWN HOURS OF ANGELICA BROPHY

Investigators say Brophy was last known to be at Harrah’s Resort Southern California in Valley Center at approximately 3:30 p.m. on July 6.

About 50 minutes later, she entered Palomar Mountain State Park after purchasing a parking pass.

Brophy was known to enjoy hiking, making the location significant to investigators.

But she never returned home.

Her family reported her missing that night.

Three days later, her vehicle was located in a parking lot inside the park.

Angelica was not there.

HER PHONE PROVIDED NO EASY ANSWERS

Detectives contacted Brophy’s cellphone carrier on July 8 in an attempt to locate her phone.

The attempt produced no usable location information because the phone was either turned off or its battery had died.

That left investigators with a critical gap in the timeline.

They knew where Angelica had been.

They knew where her vehicle was.

But they did not know where she went afterward.

AN ENORMOUS SEARCH FOLLOWED

Search-and-rescue teams spent days combing the rugged mountain terrain.

California State Parks personnel worked with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team, Oceanside police, federal personnel and specialized canine teams.

Divers were also deployed to search a nearby pond.

Despite the extensive effort, Angelica was not found.

Police later conducted three additional searches based on newly developed investigative leads.

Still, there was no sign of her.

POLICE SAY THEY HAVE NO EVIDENCE OF FOUL PLAY

That detail remains important.

Oceanside Police Chief Taurino Valdovinos said investigators had not found evidence of foul play.

The coordinated ground search was suspended on July 22 after search-and-rescue resources had been extensively deployed, but police stressed that the disappearance investigation remained active. (

And no suspect has been publicly identified.

THEN CAME THE DISCOVERY OF HUMAN REMAINS

On August 12, a volunteer search-and-rescue team discovered human remains in an embankment near the 33000 block of South Grade Road in Pauma Valley.

The location was less than three miles from the entrance to Palomar Mountain State Park.

The proximity immediately made the discovery significant to people following Angelica’s disappearance.

But authorities said they did not believe the remains were connected to Brophy’s case.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Homicide Unit took over the investigation into the remains.

The Medical Examiner’s Office is responsible for determining the cause and manner of death and identifying the person.

ANOTHER FAMILY IS NOW WAITING FOR ANSWERS

The discovery has created a second mystery.

Authorities have not publicly identified the person whose remains were found.

That investigation is separate from the search for Angelica.

For Brophy’s family, however, the development brought no closure.

They are still waiting to learn what happened to their mother, wife, sister and friend.
