Nicolas Cage is expected to return as Benjamin Gates in National Treasure 3, as director Jon Turteltaub confirms the long-awaited sequel is finally in development

National Treasure 3 Confirmed in Development as Nicolas Cage Could Return

After years of speculation, National Treasure 3 is finally moving forward.

On August 21, 2026, director Jon Turteltaub publicly confirmed that the long-awaited sequel is in development, describing the project as “finally real.”

Turteltaub revealed that a script is already in place and said he is pleased with the material. Disney has also indicated that the project is viable, giving the long-dormant sequel a significant boost.

Nicolas Cage is expected to reprise his role as Benjamin Franklin Gates, the treasure-hunting historian at the center of the franchise. Turteltaub suggested that the filmmakers hope to bring back as much of the original cast as possible, saying, “to whatever extent we can, everyone’s back.”

However, there is still an important distinction between development and an official production commitment. Neither Cage nor Disney has confirmed a signed deal, and there is currently no official filming start date or theatrical release date.

For now, National Treasure 3 remains in development, but after years of uncertainty, the franchise appears closer than ever to returning to the big screen.
