Karmelo Anthony Planned to Testify but Backed Out Over Fears His Testimony Could Hurt His Case

Karmelo Anthony had initially planned to testify at his trial in connection with the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf, but ultimately decided not to take the stand because of concerns about potentially damaging evidence from his past.

According to Anthony’s attorney, the defense withdrew the decision after prosecutors indicated they could introduce information that might negatively affect Anthony’s case if he testified.

The dispute has since become part of Anthony’s legal effort to obtain a new trial. His defense argues that there had been an understanding limiting the use of sensitive information concerning the backgrounds of both Anthony and Metcalf.

Prosecutors, however, maintain that Anthony’s potential testimony was not covered by any such agreement and dispute the defense’s characterization of what had been discussed.

Anthony was previously convicted in connection with Metcalf’s death and sentenced to 35 years in prison in June 2026.

The issue remains part of his post-trial legal proceedings. A judge has not granted a new trial based on this dispute, and Anthony’s legal team can continue pursuing available appeals and other legal remedies.
