MISSING WOMAN FOUND ALIVE IN MEXICO AFTER MORE THAN A YEAR — BUT THE MYSTERY OF HER DISAPPEARANCE DEEPENS

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — A missing-person case that remained unresolved for more than a year has taken an extraordinary turn after investigators confirmed that Ganna Kovrizhynkh is alive and staying in Mexico.

Kovrizhynkh, a Ukrainian citizen who was 38 when she disappeared, was reported missing in July 2025 after her vehicle and camper trailer were discovered abandoned on private property in Potrero, California, near the U.S.-Mexico border.

Now, more than a year later, authorities have finally made contact with her.

And while the discovery has answered the most important question — Ganna is alive — it has also raised a new one:

Why did she leave everything behind and disappear?

Ganna KovrizhynkhTHE DISAPPEARANCE THAT BEGAN WITH AN ABANDONED VEHICLE

Ganna was traveling through San Diego County as part of a cross-country road trip when her family lost contact with her.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, her friend reported her missing on July 12, 2025, after family members said they had last heard from her on July 5. Her Jeep Grand Cherokee and trailer were later found unattended in Potrero.

The location immediately drew investigators’ attention because Potrero is relatively close to the U.S.-Mexico border.

At the time, detectives said they believed she may have crossed into Mexico through the Tecate area, but they did not know whether she had left voluntarily or whether someone else was involved.

For months, there was no definitive answer.

THEN INVESTIGATORS GOT A BREAKTHROUGH

On August 7, 2026, sheriff’s investigators were able to establish contact with Ganna and verify her identity.

Authorities now believe she voluntarily crossed into Mexico and say she is currently staying in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, hundreds of miles south of the U.S. border. The Ukrainian Embassy has also been notified of her whereabouts.

The development brought an extraordinary conclusion to a case that had remained open for more than a year.

Most importantly, investigators now have confirmation that Ganna survived.

BUT HER LAST MESSAGE MADE THE CASE EVEN MORE PUZZLING

Before disappearing, Ganna sent her mother a photograph of a letter along with GPS coordinates connected to Potrero.

According to authorities, the letter contained instructions concerning what should happen to her personal assets.

That detail immediately raised questions about whether Ganna had intentionally planned to leave her previous life behind.

Why would someone traveling across the country suddenly abandon a vehicle and trailer?

Why send instructions about personal belongings?

And why would she then apparently cross an international border and remain out of contact with family?

Those questions remain unanswered.

Ganna KovrizhynkhINVESTIGATORS HAD CONSIDERED MULTIPLE POSSIBILITIES

When Ganna first disappeared, authorities did not know whether she had voluntarily left or whether she had been harmed.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said investigators conducted an extensive investigation and exhausted available leads before eventually establishing contact with her.

The discovery of her abandoned vehicle had initially left investigators with few clues about her destination.

But the proximity to Mexico remained significant.

Now, investigators believe their original theory was correct: Ganna crossed the border voluntarily.

SHE MAY ALSO HAVE BEEN USING ANOTHER NAME

Authorities previously warned that Ganna may have been using the name Angel Volnaya.

The sheriff’s office also noted that she may have been wearing a wig and had several tattoos on her arms, information that was included in the original missing-person appeal.

That possibility added another layer of difficulty to the search.

A person traveling under another name can be considerably harder to locate, particularly after crossing an international border.

THERE IS NO CURRENT INDICATION SHE IS IN DANGER

The latest information provides an important reassurance for her family.

Authorities believe Ganna is in Mexico voluntarily and have not indicated that she is being held against her will.

Her location has been communicated to the Ukrainian Embassy.

However, officials have not publicly explained why she chose to leave the United States or why she remained out of contact for such a long period.

That part of the mystery remains.

A YEAR-LONG SEARCH ENDS — BUT QUESTIONS REMAIN

For Ganna’s loved ones, the latest development is undoubtedly a major relief.

For investigators, however, the case still contains unanswered pieces.

What happened after she left her Jeep and trailer in Potrero?

When exactly did she cross into Mexico?

Why did she choose Sinaloa?

Why did she apparently remain disconnected from her family for more than a year?

And perhaps the most difficult question:

What was happening in Ganna’s life when she decided to walk away from everything?

There is currently no public evidence establishing that someone else forced her to disappear.

Instead, investigators believe she voluntarily crossed into Mexico.

But voluntary disappearance does not necessarily explain the circumstances that led to it.

THE MYSTERY HAS CHANGED — NOT DISAPPEARED

For more than a year, the question was simple:

Where is Ganna Kovrizhynkh?

Now authorities know.

She is alive, her identity has been confirmed, and investigators believe she is staying in Sinaloa, Mexico.

But the case has entered a new chapter.

The search for Ganna may be over — yet the search for answers is not.

A woman vanished. Her vehicle and trailer were abandoned near the border. A mysterious message was left for her mother. More than a year passed without answers. And now, unexpectedly, Ganna has been found alive in Mexico.

The biggest mystery is no longer where she went. It’s why she left.
