LAS VEGAS — A new piece of surveillance evidence has shed heartbreaking light on the final known movements of Alisa Goods, the 63-year-old New York grandmother whose disappearance during a Las Vegas trip sparked a nearly two-week search.
Goods was ultimately found dead in a drainage area near Harry Reid International Airport on Aug. 20, but authorities have not yet released her official cause or manner of death.
Now, investigators say airport surveillance footage may have captured what happened to her on the very day she disappeared.
SURVEILLANCE CAPTURED A DISTURBING SEQUENCE
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, footage from Aug. 8 shows Goods falling down an embankment near the airport.
The video reportedly shows her getting back up before collapsing again.
Police said there was no further movement observed after she collapsed.
But there was a crucial problem: her position was hidden from the nearby roadway, meaning people passing through the area would not necessarily have been able to see her.
That detail could help explain why Goods remained undiscovered for nearly two weeks despite the search for her.
SHE HAD LEFT A FRIEND’S HOME THAT DAY
Goods had traveled from New York to Las Vegas to visit a longtime friend.
According to her family, she left his apartment on Aug. 8 to take a bus to a nearby CVS pharmacy.
She never returned.
Her family reported her missing on Aug. 10, launching a search that would eventually stretch across Las Vegas and involve relatives, police and members of the public.
Her disappearance became even more alarming because Goods had recently undergone several surgeries that made walking more difficult.
Her daughter, Kristen Goods, told CBS News that the extreme Las Vegas heat also concerned the family because of her mother’s limited mobility.
THEN THE MYSTERIOUS TEXTS STARTED
Two days after Goods disappeared, her family began receiving messages from her phone.
The messages reportedly asked relatives for help, gas money and eventually Bitcoin.
One request immediately raised suspicions.
Goods did not drive.
So why would she suddenly be asking relatives for gas money?
Her family began wondering whether someone else had possession of her phone — and whether Goods herself might be in danger.
The messages became one of the most mysterious elements of the case.
POLICE SAY THE MESSAGES APPEAR TO BE UNRELATED
Investigators have since indicated that the people behind the suspicious communications were unrelated “bad actors” and were not believed to be connected to Goods’ disappearance.
Authorities have not publicly identified those individuals.
Most importantly, police have not linked the messages to the circumstances surrounding Goods’ death.
That means one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the case may have been a separate incident involving her phone.

HER BODY WAS FOUND NEAR THE AIRPORT
Just before 1:45 a.m. on Aug. 20, Las Vegas police received a call about a deceased woman in a drainage ditch near Wayne Newton Boulevard and the Terminal 1 parking garage at Harry Reid International Airport.
Officers arrived and identified the woman as Goods.
The location was apparently difficult to see from the street.
That fact, combined with the surveillance footage, may explain how Goods could remain in the area for days without being located.
THE CAUSE OF DEATH REMAINS UNKNOWN
Despite the new footage, authorities have not announced what caused Goods’ death.
The Clark County coroner’s office is responsible for determining the official cause and manner of death, and that information had not been released in the latest reports.
Police have also not announced evidence of foul play or classified the case as a homicide.

Her niece, Alana Calloway, said the family was heartbroken and thanked the public for helping spread the word about Goods’ disappearance. The family has also asked for privacy while grieving.
