14 INJURED AFTER KENTUCKY SCHOOL BUS CARRYING ELEMENTARY STUDENTS OVERTURNS

BULLITT COUNTY, Ky. — A routine ride home turned frightening Monday afternoon when a school bus carrying 28 elementary school students overturned on a rural Kentucky road, leaving 13 children and the driver with minor injuries.

The crash happened at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Aug. 24 along Wilson Creek Road in Bullitt County, involving a Bullitt County Public Schools bus carrying students from Lebanon Junction Elementary School.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, and the response quickly expanded as officials worked to account for every child aboard the bus.

14 PEOPLE RECEIVED MEDICAL CARE

According to Bullitt County Public Schools Superintendent Jesse Bacon, emergency medical crews transported the driver and eight students to area hospitals for evaluation.

Five additional students were taken by their parents to local medical facilities.

The remaining children were evaluated at the scene and released directly to their families. Officials said the injuries reported were minor.

Norton Children’s Hospital confirmed that it treated seven patients connected to the crash, all with minor injuries.

STUDENT DESCRIBES THE TERRIFYING MOMENT

A fifth-grade student who was aboard the bus later described how quickly everything happened.

According to his account, the bus swerved to avoid a truck, went off the roadway and overturned into a ditch.

The student said passengers were thrown around inside the bus and that other children fell on top of him after the vehicle rolled over.

The rural location also created difficulties for some students trying to contact their families because of limited cellphone service.

One student’s parents reportedly used a family-tracking application to locate him and arrived before emergency responders.

WHAT CAUSED THE BUS TO OVERTURN?

Investigators are still working to establish the precise circumstances.

Early accounts from students and local officials indicate that the bus driver may have attempted to avoid an oncoming truck that was traveling near the center of the narrow road.

The bus then reportedly left the pavement and overturned.

Officials have not announced a final determination of fault or cause.

The Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.

A MASSIVE EMERGENCY RESPONSE

The crash prompted a significant response from local emergency agencies.

Lebanon Junction Fire Chief Adam Heath said the incident required all available Bullitt County ambulances, along with additional EMS crews from neighboring Jefferson and Nelson counties.

First responders faced the immediate challenge of checking dozens of children, determining who required transportation and safely reuniting students with their families.

School officials also brought in additional support staff and counselors to help students process what had happened.

PARENTS WERE QUICKLY REUNITED WITH THEIR CHILDREN

For many families, the most frightening part came before they knew whether their children were okay.

As news spread that a school bus had overturned, parents rushed toward the area seeking information.

School officials said the remaining students were eventually cleared by first responders and released directly to their families.
