NORTH CAROLINA DOCTOR ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGED ROAD-RAGE INCIDENT LEAVES TWO SISTERS INJURED
A highway confrontation in Virginia has led to the arrest of a North Carolina doctor after police say two sisters were injured during an alleged road-rage incident on Interstate 77.
According to Virginia State Police, Dr. Richard Arriviello, 61, of Charlotte, allegedly fired into a moving Jeep shortly before 9 a.m. on Aug. 22 in Carroll County, about three miles north of the North Carolina state line.
TWO SISTERS WERE INJURED
The Jeep was carrying two sisters, ages 12 and 20.
Police said both were struck in the legs and taken to a hospital. Their injuries were reported as not life-threatening.
Investigators have not publicly detailed what initially triggered the confrontation between the two vehicles.
The Jeep’s driver was also charged with reckless driving, although authorities have not released the driver’s identity.
POLICE SAY THE SUSPECT FLED
After the alleged incident, Arriviello reportedly left the scene in a Mercedes-Benz.
Troopers later stopped the vehicle near Exit 19 on I-77, where Arriviello was taken into custody. He remains held at the New River Valley Regional Jail, according to authorities.
He faces several felony charges, including maliciously shooting into an occupied vehicle, shooting from a vehicle, maliciously causing bodily harm with intent to maim, and using a firearm during the commission of a felony.
HE IS A LICENSED PHYSICIAN
Arriviello is a licensed physician in North Carolina and owns Family Urgent Care in Monroe, according to state medical records and local reporting. He has been licensed since 2010.
The arrest has therefore attracted additional attention because of his professional background.
However, the allegations remain just that — allegations — and the criminal case will determine what actually occurred during the highway confrontation.
THE BIG QUESTIONS
Why did the confrontation begin?
What happened between the Mercedes and the Jeep immediately before police say shots were fired?
And what evidence will investigators uncover about the moments leading up to the incident?
Those questions remain under investigation.
For now, the two sisters are expected to recover from their injuries, while Arriviello faces serious felony charges stemming from an encounter that began on a busy interstate and ended with a police arrest.
A routine drive turned into a terrifying highway confrontation — and investigators are now working to determine exactly what happened in the moments before the sisters were injured.
