JANG MI-RAN CASE: MISSING WOMAN FOUND DEAD AFTER 104 DAYS AS POLICE SCANDAL DEEPENS

JEJU, South Korea — A 37-year-old woman who disappeared from South Korea’s Jeju Island more than three months ago has been found dead, while a police officer’s alleged mishandling of her missing-person case has triggered a wider investigation into hundreds of other cases.

Jang Mi-ran disappeared on the night of May 12 after leaving the accommodation where she had been staying in Hallim, Jeju. Her body was discovered on Aug. 24 at a palm-tree farm roughly a kilometer from the area where she had been staying. Police confirmed her identity the following day.

HER CASE WAS ALLEGEDLY CLOSED WITHOUT CONFIRMING SHE WAS SAFE

One of the most disturbing developments came after investigators examined how Jang’s original missing-person report had been handled.

A police officer identified by his surname, Bu, allegedly closed the case after claiming he had contacted Jang and confirmed that she did not want her location disclosed.

Investigators later found that records did not support the claim that Bu had actually spoken with her.

The officer is now facing allegations including dereliction of duty and falsifying official records.

JANG REMAINED MISSING FOR MORE THAN 100 DAYS

Because the case had allegedly been closed prematurely, Jang remained missing for more than three months.

Her family later reported her disappearance again, prompting authorities to launch a renewed search.

Police eventually located her body on Aug. 24.

Investigators currently believe she likely died in the early hours of May 13, shortly after she disappeared. Preliminary findings have pointed toward hanging, while authorities have said there were no immediate indications of foul play.

The investigation into the exact circumstances of her death remains ongoing.

HER FATHER NOW QUESTIONS WHY SHE WAS THERE

Jang’s father has raised questions about the location where his daughter’s body was discovered.

He told Korean media that Jang had previously described the palm-tree farm as frightening and said she did not like going there.

That has left the family struggling to understand why she would have ended up at the location.

Her father’s comments do not establish that another person was involved, but they highlight the family’s continuing questions about the final hours of her life.

THE POLICE SCANDAL IS NOW WIDENING

The controversy did not stop with Jang’s case.

Investigators say the same officer may have improperly closed another missing-person case involving a man in his 60s. That man was later found dead on Aug. 22.

Authorities are now reviewing 298 missing-person cases that the officer handled during approximately one year and five months of service to determine whether other cases were improperly closed.

Four senior officers at Jeju Seobu Police Station have also been removed from their duties amid questions about supervision and oversight.

JEJU’S POLICE CHIEF APOLOGIZES

The scandal has now reached the highest levels of the Jeju police.

On Aug. 27, Ko Pyeong-ki, chief of the Jeju Provincial Police Agency, publicly apologized for the handling of missing-person cases.

He promised a thorough investigation and a comprehensive review of missing-person cases across Jeju, along with stronger safeguards designed to prevent similar failures in the future.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has also called for greater police accountability following the controversy.

QUESTIONS REMAIN ABOUT JANG’S FINAL HOURS

Police currently say there is no clear evidence of foul play.

But Jang’s death has raised two separate questions: what happened to her after she disappeared, and why was her missing-person case closed without authorities actually confirming that she was safe?

The second question has already triggered a much broader investigation.

As officials review hundreds of cases and examine the conduct of the officer involved, Jang’s family is left waiting for a complete explanation of what happened during the final hours of her life.

After 104 days without answers, Jang Mi-ran has been found — but the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and the police failures that followed have opened an even larger mystery on Jeju Island.
