Shelley Fabares, the beloved actress best known for her roles on “The Donna Reed Show” and “Coach,” died of pneumonia, her family has confirmed.

Fabares died on Aug. 22 in Los Angeles at the age of 82, surrounded by loved ones. Her family confirmed the cause of death to PEOPLE five days after her passing.

She rose to fame playing Mary Stone on “The Donna Reed Show,” a role that helped establish her as one of television’s most recognizable young stars.

Her career later expanded into film, where she appeared alongside Elvis Presley in three movies: “Girl Happy,” “Spinout” and “Clambake.”

She also achieved unexpected success as a singer.

In 1962, Fabares recorded “Johnny Angel,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the defining hits associated with her early career.
