Five people have been arrested in connection with a violent three-vehicle crash that killed two best friends who had just started their senior year of high school, officials with the California Highway Patrol announced.

Maddalyn Dailey and Isabell Hill, known to loved ones as “Maddy” and “Izzy,” had been friends since elementary school and were students at Sultana High School in Hesperia.

Maddalyn would have turned 18 in November.

“She was my baby girl,” her father, Dustin Dailey, told KTLA.

Family members said the two teens were rarely apart.

“Her and her friend Isabell, they were ride or die,” Dailey said. “They were inseparable.”

Isabell’s mother, Megan Delang, remembered her daughter as “so smart, so kind” and “beautiful.”

The Aug. 14 crash happened as Maddalyn was taking Isabell home before returning to her own family for dinner, her father said. Less than a minute later, he heard the crash.

“I heard the impact, and I automatically knew,” he said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the drivers of a Chevrolet Camaro and a Dodge Charger were both speeding northbound on Ridgecrest Road when Maddalyn’s Acura entered the roadway from Elmwood Drive.

Both vehicles struck Maddalyn’s Acura, with the force of the collision splitting the car in half, authorities said.

“CHP detectives from the Inland Division Major Crimes Unit arrested George Gary Sanchez, 49, of Riverside, the driver of a Dodge Charger, shortly after the crash and immediately began searching for Terry Lamar Easter, 50, of Apple Valley, the driver of a Chevrolet Camaro who fled the scene,” officials said in a news release.

During the manhunt for Easter, investigators arrested Victorville resident Ryan James Lewis, 45, along with Apple Valley residents Lukevy Shantell Yates, 49, and Madge Wells, 74, on suspicion of being accessories after the crash.

“All three cooperated with investigators and were later released,” CHP investigators said.

Easter ultimately surrendered to law enforcement on Aug. 26 after more than 10 days in hiding.

Both Sanchez and Easter were booked into the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Central Detention Center on suspicion of murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

“The apprehension of these suspects reflects the CHP’s commitment to pursuing justice,” CHP Inland Division Chief Tariq Johnson said. “While nothing can erase the devastating loss of two young lives, we hope these arrests bring some measure of comfort to their families and send a clear message that those responsible for senseless acts will be held accountable.”
