Florida Jury Recommends Death Penalty for Man Convicted in 1993 Murder of 12-Year-Old Girl

A Florida jury has unanimously recommended the death penalty for 65-year-old Jeffrey Norman Crum more than three decades after the murder of 12-year-old Jennifer Renee Odom.

The Hernando County jury voted 12–0 to recommend capital punishment after Crum was convicted of kidnapping, sexual assault, and first-degree murder in connection with Jennifer’s death.

Jennifer disappeared on February 19, 1993, after getting off her school bus and beginning her walk home. Her body was discovered six days later in an abandoned orange grove, bringing national attention to the decades-old unsolved case.

Crum’s conviction marked the culmination of an investigation that remained unresolved for more than 30 years before authorities ultimately identified and prosecuted him.

Death Sentence Has Not Yet Been Finalized

Despite the unanimous jury recommendation, Crum has not yet been formally sentenced to death.

Under Florida’s capital sentencing process, the jury’s decision serves as a recommendation, while the judge makes the final determination regarding the sentence.

A Spencer hearing is scheduled for October 21, 2026, giving the court an opportunity to consider additional information before the final sentencing decision.

For now, Crum remains convicted of the crimes, but the ultimate punishment has not yet been formally imposed.

The upcoming hearing will mark another significant step in a case that began with the disappearance and killing of a 12-year-old girl in 1993 and continued through more than three decades of investigation and legal proceedings.
