HUMAN REMAINS FOUND IN SEARCH FOR MISSING MELBOURNE FATHER KHALED MALAS

MELBOURNE, Australia — Human remains have been discovered during the search for Khaled Malas, a 37-year-old father who disappeared after allegedly being shot during a confrontation in Melbourne’s northwest.

Police found the remains covered in grass on Havelock Road in Clarkefield, about 9 miles from Wildwood, on Wednesday afternoon. The remains have not yet been formally identified, and a post-mortem examination is expected to determine their identity and cause of death.

A WEEK-LONG SEARCH

Malas was last seen on Aug. 19, after traveling to a property in Wildwood with two associates. Police allege a confrontation occurred at the property and that Malas was shot.

Authorities subsequently launched an extensive search for the father of three, with homicide detectives examining areas around Wildwood, Sunbury and surrounding communities.

Investigators had previously expressed grave concerns for Malas’ welfare and believed he may have succumbed to his injuries.

MAN CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH THE CASE

A 56-year-old man, Mohammed Aboueid, has been charged with one count of intentionally causing serious injury.

Police said the charges will be reviewed after the post-mortem examination and that additional or alternative charges could follow depending on the findings.

Authorities believe the people involved knew one another. Investigators have also been examining a black Mitsubishi Triton allegedly seen traveling through the Wildwood, Sunbury, Bulla, Greenvale and Oaklands Junction areas around the time of the incident.

THE SEARCH FOR ANSWERS

Police previously searched areas including a Sunbury waste facility as they tried to locate Malas.

His clothing was also reportedly discovered burned near Lancefield Road the morning after the alleged shooting, adding to investigators’ concerns about what happened after he was injured.

The discovery of human remains now marks a major development, but authorities have stressed that formal identification is still pending.

REMEMBERED AS A DEVOTED FATHER

Malas’ family and friends have described him as a hardworking man and devoted father.

A longtime friend told ABC News that Malas loved his young family and had worked hard after arriving in Australia 14 years ago. He was also reportedly supporting his parents overseas.

His family had spent days waiting for answers while police searched for him.

Now, the discovery on Havelock Road could provide investigators with crucial evidence about what happened to the missing father.

The coroner has been notified, and forensic investigators are expected to examine the remains.

Until formal identification is completed, police have not confirmed that the remains belong to Malas.

For his loved ones, however, the discovery comes after days of uncertainty and growing fears for his safety.
