Teen Killed at Louisville Bus Stop: Defendants Receive 60-Year and 35-Year Sentences

The family of 16-year-old Tyree Smith, who was shot and killed at a school bus stop in Louisville, Kentucky, in 2021, continues to grapple with his death as the two defendants in the case receive lengthy prison sentences.

Tyree was shot and killed on September 22, 2021, at a school bus stop in Louisville. Two other teenagers were also wounded in the shooting.

The two defendants, Mekhi Cable and Demaurion Moore, were both 15 years old at the time of the shooting. Both were convicted in June 2026.

Defendants Receive Different Sentences

Despite earlier reports suggesting both defendants could receive five-year sentences, the latest case updates indicate that their punishments were substantially different.

• Demaurion Moore: sentenced to 35 years in prison under a plea agreement

The significant sentences bring a measure of accountability to a case that has weighed heavily on Tyree’s family for nearly five years.

Mother Says There Are “No Winners”

Tyree’s mother, Sherita Smith, spoke about the lasting pain of losing her son.

She said that even after five years, she continues to struggle with the fact that the people responsible for Tyree’s death still have the opportunity to see their own children while serving time in prison, whereas she no longer has the chance to see her son.

“There are no winners,” she said.

For Tyree’s family, the prison sentences cannot undo the loss of a teenager whose life was cut short. The case continues to serve as a painful reminder of the lasting impact that gun violence can have on families and communities.
