81-Year-Old Woman Loses Both Legs After SUV Crashes Into Los Angeles Restaurant Patio

An 81-year-old Los Angeles woman suffered devastating injuries, including the loss of both legs, after an SUV crashed onto a sidewalk and struck the table where she was dining with her family.

The victim was identified as Cristina Vargas. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. on July 7, 2026, outside Los Cinco Puntos in Boyle Heights.

Vargas was having a meal with her daughter and a friend in the restaurant’s outdoor dining area when an SUV reportedly veered onto the sidewalk and plowed into their table.

Victim Undergoes Multiple Surgeries

Vargas became trapped beneath the vehicle and suffered severe injuries.

She underwent three surgeries as doctors attempted to treat the extensive damage. Despite their efforts, she ultimately had to undergo amputation of both legs.

Her daughter was also injured in the crash, suffering injuries to her head and knee.

Driver Arrested

Police believe the female driver may have been impaired at the time of the collision.

She was arrested and is facing multiple criminal charges in connection with the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances that caused the SUV to leave the roadway and strike the diners.

For Vargas and her family, the crash has resulted in life-changing injuries following what had begun as an ordinary afternoon meal together.
