LUCY LETBY CASE TAKES ANOTHER TURN: FURTHER CHARGES RULED OUT — BUT MAJOR REPORT IS STILL TO COME

The Lucy Letby case has taken another significant turn after prosecutors confirmed that she will not face additional charges over allegations involving six more babies.

The Crown Prosecution Service said an independent review had re-examined substantial evidence after families challenged the original decision not to prosecute further.

The review ultimately upheld the decision.

NO NEW CHARGES — FOR NOW

The allegations involved babies who were treated at the Countess of Chester Hospital and Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

After reviewing the available evidence, prosecutors concluded that the legal evidential test for further charges had not been met.

The decision does not overturn or change Letby’s existing convictions.

She remains in prison serving whole-life sentences following her convictions for murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others.

BUT THE CASE IS FAR FROM OVER

Despite the latest CPS decision, several separate processes surrounding the case remain active.

Letby’s legal team has been seeking a review of her convictions through the Criminal Cases Review Commission, while medical experts have publicly challenged aspects of the evidence used at trial.

Those arguments remain disputed and do not amount to a finding that her convictions were unsafe.

THE NEXT MAJOR MILESTONE

One of the biggest developments still ahead is the Thirlwall Inquiry.

The public inquiry has been examining how concerns about the neonatal unit were handled, the experiences of affected families and what lessons should be learned.

Its final report is scheduled to be published on 15 September 2026.

That means the latest CPS decision may not be the final major chapter in the wider Lucy Letby story.

No further charges have been authorised — but with the CCRC review and the Thirlwall Inquiry still in focus, the controversy surrounding the case is far from over.
