Two Dead After Flash Flood Sweeps Through Grand Canyon as Search for Missing Continues

A sudden flash flood swept through Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area of the Grand Canyon following heavy rainfall, leaving at least two people dead and prompting an ongoing search for others who remain missing or unaccounted for.

The flooding caused dangerous conditions around Bright Angel Creek and the Colorado River, forcing authorities to launch a large-scale evacuation and rescue operation.

More Than 60 People Evacuated

More than 60 people were airlifted to safety from the affected areas as floodwaters surged through the canyon.

The powerful water also destroyed multiple pedestrian bridges, while debris and large rocks were carried through the area and into the Colorado River.

The Phantom Ranch and North Kaibab Trail areas were subsequently closed, with officials continuing to assess the damage and safety risks.

Search for Missing People Continues

The National Park Service (NPS) initially reported that more than 20 people might be missing or unreachable following the flooding.

That figure was later revised to approximately 15 people who remained missing or had not yet been accounted for.

By August 31, search teams had recovered two bodies.

One of the victims was identified as a 46-year-old man, whose body was discovered near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River.

Authorities have continued searching the canyon and river areas for anyone still unaccounted for.

The combination of rugged terrain, damaged infrastructure and hazardous conditions has made the recovery effort particularly challenging. Officials are expected to provide additional information as search operations progress and more victims are identified.
