ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The man killed by a lightning strike while riding a Jet Ski off Fort DeSoto, Florida, has been identified by loved ones.
“On Saturday, August 29th, our dear friend Steve Matheson tragically lost his life in a lightning strike while riding a jet ski off the coast of Florida,” a statement on the GoFundMe page read.

Pinellas County deputies responded to a water rescue just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Matheson was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and later pronounced dead.
Matheson is remembered as “a wonderful man, devoted husband, and loving father” of four children he shared with his wife, Abbie, according to the GoFundMe.
“He was the kind of husband and father who loved deeply, showed up fully, and made his family the center of his world. Second place to that would be his love for football, especially BYU football,” the statement said.

Friends who set up the fundraiser also noted that, as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Matheson kept faith an important part of his life.
The fundraiser was set up to help cover funeral expenses, the cost of bringing Matheson back to Utah and to support this family with the financial challenges that come with sudden loss. As of Monday afternoon, $38,000 of the $50,000 goal had been met.
“There are no words that can truly express the magnitude of this loss for Abbie and their children,” the GoFundMe page said.. “Any contribution, no matter the amount, will help ease some of the financial burdens they are facing and allow Abbie to focus on her children and their family as they grieve and begin to navigate life without Steve.”
