For six-year-old Charlotte Whiting, childhood has looked very different from that of most children her age.

From before she was even born, doctors knew something was wrong. At 20 weeks of pregnancy, her parents, Emily and Dan, learned that their baby was facing multiple complex medical problems.

When Charlotte was born at around 37 weeks, her parents had only a brief moment to hold her before she was taken to the NICU, where she would spend the next 72 days.

Before she was even a week old, Charlotte underwent her first operation to help address problems affecting her kidneys. A month later came another major procedure to remove a cyst affecting her liver and reconstruct much of her gastrointestinal tract.

And her medical journey did not end there.

Over the years, Charlotte has undergone 18 operations and procedures, while doctors have also monitored problems involving her heart, kidneys, liver, gallbladder and digestive system, along with a cleft lip and palate.

For her mother Emily, caring for Charlotte became a full-time role.

“There were so many different conditions and so many specialists involved,” Emily explained. “For a long time, we felt like we were in this rare-disease no man’s land, searching for answers.”

A whole genome sequencing test performed by Cleveland Clinic geneticist Dr. Adnan Alsadah finally revealed that Charlotte had MED12-related disorder, also known as Hardikar Syndrome — an ultra-rare genetic condition linked to many of the health challenges she had faced since birth.

At the time of her diagnosis, Charlotte was believed to be only the ninth documented person in the world with the condition.

For Emily and Dan, finally having a name for what their daughter was experiencing brought something they had been missing for years: understanding.

“The diagnosis has been life-changing for us,” Emily said. “It gave us answers, but it also helped us find other families who understand what this journey feels like.”

Despite everything she has faced, Charlotte is described by her family as a lively, loving child and a devoted big sister to Liam, 4, and Eden, 2.

“Charlotte is an amazing gift to our family,” Emily shared. “Through all of her challenges, she continues to be an incredible blessing.”

Today, there may still be many medical appointments and uncertainties ahead, but Charlotte’s family no longer feels like they are searching in the dark.

They finally have an explanation for her extraordinary journey — and, with it, a clearer path forward.
