A weekend hike in New Jersey turned into a desperate search for two elderly hikers — and ended with one heartbreaking discovery.

Virginia Taetzch, 87, and John Higgins, 77, had gone hiking together at Pyramid Mountain in Montville Township, New Jersey, on Sunday, Aug. 30.

By the following day, their vehicle was still sitting unattended at the trailhead.

Neither had returned.

Authorities quickly realized something was wrong.

THE CAR THAT RAISED THE ALARM

Police were alerted after the pair’s vehicle was discovered at the Pyramid Mountain parking area on Monday night.

Investigators determined that Taetzch and Higgins had entered the area for a hike around 1 p.m. Sunday.

But as darkness came, there was still no sign of them.

Because both were considered at-risk missing persons, authorities launched an extensive search involving multiple agencies.

More than 30 officers took part in the operation, according to reports, with the Montville Township Police Department coordinating with other local agencies, including the Morris County Sheriff’s Office and Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

Search teams began working through the rugged mountain terrain, hoping to locate the pair before it was too late.

THEN, ONE OF THEM WAS FOUND ALIVE

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, rescuers finally located John Higgins.

The 77-year-old was alive and was transported to Morristown Medical Center for treatment.

But the search was not over.

Taetzch was still missing somewhere in the mountain area.

Then came the devastating discovery.

Search teams located the 87-year-old woman, but she could not be saved.

She was found deceased at the scene.

The dramatic contrast — one hiking partner rescued alive while the other was found too late — brought the search to a tragic conclusion.

WHAT HAPPENED TO VIRGINIA?

At this stage, authorities have not publicly disclosed the circumstances surrounding Taetzch’s death.

Her exact cause of death has also not been released.

There has been no public indication that investigators are treating the case as a criminal incident.

Taetzch was a resident of Cedar Crest Senior Living Community in Pompton Plains, New Jersey.

For those who knew her, the story is especially painful because the search began with the hope that both hikers could be brought home safely.

Instead, only one returned.
