A North Carolina middle school student died a few days after going into cardiac arrest during football practice, leaving his family and friends devastated.

Caden Sorrell, a 13-year-old Northwest Guilford Middle School student, had just started football practice Friday, running a lap around the field before going into cardiac arrest, according to his older sister, Vanessa Clark.

“I was actually in the middle of Walmart when I got the call. My mom called me, and I immediately rushed to him,” Clark said. “He was a picture of health. We don’t know why [it happened], but it did.”

Now, as Caden’s family mourns, Clark says her last words and memories of her brother are what will keep her moving forward.

“Caden was an angel from heaven. He was brilliant, sweet, smart, kind. He made everybody around him feel loved,” she said.

She also shared her favorite memory of her brother, who wore the No. 42 for the Northwest Guilford Vikings and loved the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“We were trying to wrestle because I thought I could take him, and I couldn’t. He taught me the hard way that I could not, but it was just the laughter that we shared together,” she said.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Caden’s family with funeral expenses and medical costs.

A friend of the family says they’re looking to ensure automatic external defibrillators, which can aid in cardiac arrest, are in more accessible places when it comes to sports.
