FOUR PEOPLE ACCUSED OVER NEWBORN BABY’S DEATH NOW FACE ANOTHER SERIOUS ALLEGATION — AND IT CENTRES ON WHAT HAPPENED AFTERWARD

Four people accused in connection with the death of a newborn baby girl in Sheffield are now facing another serious allegation — one that focuses not only on what prosecutors say happened to the infant, but on what allegedly happened afterward.

Andrea Skopova, 20, Peter Horvath Jr, 19, Peter Horvath Sr, 38, and Nina Horvathova, 37, have all been charged with the murder of the baby, known publicly only as Baby S.

They are also charged with causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice by taking steps to conceal the killing of an infant, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The additional allegation has added another disturbing layer to an already devastating case.

THE BABY WAS FOUND IN AN OUTBUILDING

Police were called to a property on Holywell Heights in Sheffield’s Wincobank area on the morning of Sunday, August 30, after concerns were raised about the safety of an infant.

Baby S was subsequently found dead inside an outbuilding.

According to evidence reported in court, the newborn had been wrapped in a towel and placed inside a blue bag before being discovered.

A forensic post-mortem examination later determined that the baby’s cause of death was stab wounds. The Guardian reported that she had suffered 33 wounds from 15 separate stabbings.

The discovery has left the local community deeply shaken, with flowers placed near the police cordon as investigators continued their work.

FOUR ADULTS FACE MULTIPLE CHARGES

Skopova, Peter Horvath Jr, Peter Horvath Sr and Nina Horvathova are facing three serious charges each.

They are accused of:

• murder;
• causing or allowing the death of a child; and
• perverting the course of justice by taking steps to conceal the killing of an infant.

The Crown Prosecution Service stressed that these are criminal allegations and that the defendants have the right to a fair trial.

The CPS also warned that the proceedings are active and urged the public not to post or share information that could prejudice the case.

A 15-YEAR-OLD IS ALSO CHARGED

A 15-year-old girl has also been charged in connection with the investigation.

She faces a charge of perverting the course of justice.

Because she is a minor, she cannot legally be named.

The teenager appeared in court alongside the four adults and was remanded into youth custody. The four adults were also remanded in custody.

Authorities have not publicly alleged that the teenager was involved in the baby’s death, and her charge is specifically related to perverting the course of justice.

A COURTROOM FILLED WITH SECURITY

The defendants appeared before the court as the investigation moved into the next stage.

The proceedings attracted significant security, with reports describing seven security guards and Slovak interpreters present in court.

Relatives of the defendants were also present in the public gallery.

The court appearance was brief, but the allegations presented were among the most serious possible.

For the families involved, the proceedings now mark the beginning of a long legal process.

THE CASE WILL NOW MOVE TOWARD TRIAL

The CPS said its decision to prosecute followed an investigation by South Yorkshire Police and that prosecutors had concluded there was sufficient evidence to bring the case before a court.

But that decision is not a finding of guilt.

The four adults and the teenage girl remain defendants, and the allegations against them will ultimately have to be tested through the criminal justice process.

Meanwhile, police have urged people not to speculate about the circumstances surrounding Baby S’s death or share unverified information online.

The investigation remains ongoing.

And as the case moves toward trial, one of the most troubling questions will not only be what happened to Baby S — but what prosecutors say happened in the moments afterward, and why investigators believe attempts were allegedly made to conceal what had happened.

For now, those questions remain allegations to be tested in court.
