HE HAD JUST STARTED PRESCHOOL — THEN ONE TRAGIC MOMENT CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR PETER MULCAIRE’S FAMILY

RATHKEALE, IRELAND — A family in Co. Limerick is mourning the heartbreaking loss of two-year-old Peter Mulcaire, a little boy remembered as his family’s “sunshine” and “golden boy.”

Peter had only just started preschool when tragedy struck.

The toddler was playing on a toy tractor near his home in Rathkeale on the afternoon of September 5 when he was struck by a jeep. The vehicle did not remain at the scene, and Peter was rushed to University Hospital Limerick by a family member.

Despite efforts to save him, Peter died from the injuries he sustained.

Gardaí later arrested a man in his 30s at another location on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant. He was released pending analysis of a blood and urine sample, and the investigation remains ongoing.

HE HAD ONLY JUST BEGUN A NEW CHAPTER

What makes Peter’s story even more heartbreaking for his family is how recently they had celebrated a major milestone.

Just days before the tragedy, Peter had started preschool.

His mother, Kerrie Mulcaire, had shared photographs marking her little boy’s first day, capturing a moment that should have been the beginning of a happy new chapter.

Instead, those photographs became precious memories of a time his family will never get back.

Relatives described Peter as a loving, playful and affectionate child who brought enormous joy to everyone around him.

His aunt Teresa Harty remembered him as his mother’s “golden boy” and said he meant the world to the entire family.

Peter was also described as being especially close to his father and older brother Jim.

A FUNERAL FILLED WITH MEMORIES OF A LITTLE BOY

Peter’s funeral became a deeply emotional celebration of his short life.

At St. Mary’s Church in Rathkeale, family members, friends and school staff gathered to say goodbye. Staff from Peter’s schools formed a guard of honour as mourners remembered the little boy who had only recently started preschool.

His coffin was surrounded by reminders of the things he loved.

His buggy, his brother’s school bag, and items representing his love of animals and ponies were brought forward during the service.

The church also heard how Peter loved the song “You Are My Sunshine.”

Fr. Eamonn Fitzgibbon told mourners that Peter had been full of fun and mischief, describing him as the “life and soul” of his new classroom.

He was remembered not simply for the tragedy surrounding his final days, but for the happiness he brought during his short life.

A FINAL FAREWELL NO ONE EXPECTED

Peter was later laid to rest at New Cemetery in Rathkeale in a procession featuring four white horses and four Lamborghini cars, reflecting the love and support surrounding his family.

His baby sister Delilah was also christened during the funeral service, allowing Peter to remain part of a milestone that should have been a joyful family occasion.

Peter’s mother later shared an emotional tribute, promising that she would tell Delilah all about her brother.

The words captured the pain of a mother who had expected to watch her little boy grow up alongside his siblings.

A COMMUNITY LEFT HEARTBROKEN

The tragedy has deeply affected Rathkeale, where residents have rallied around Peter’s family.

Fr. Fitzgibbon described the loss as a profound shock for the community and said the town would come together to support the family through the difficult days ahead.

For Peter’s loved ones, however, the grief is much more personal.

He was only two.

He had just started preschool.

He had a family who adored him, an older brother who shared his new adventures, and a baby sister who will grow up hearing stories about the brother she lost far too soon.

Peter’s life was brief, but the memories he left behind are already deeply cherished.
