A66 CRASH FUNERAL TAKES SHOCKING TURN AS FATHER IS CHARGED AFTER HIS SON’S FINAL FAREWELL

What was meant to be a final goodbye to 17-year-old Cole Worthy was suddenly disrupted when police were called to the funeral — and his father was later charged.

The funeral of 17-year-old Cole Worthy, one of seven people killed in the devastating A66 crash in Middlesbrough, took an unexpected turn when a disturbance broke out during the service.

Cole’s father, Gye Worthy, 39, was arrested at Teesside Crematorium on Wednesday, September 9, after police were called to reports of a disturbance inside the funeral service.

He has since been charged with common assault, a public-order offence and obstructing police.

Worthy is due to appear before Teesside Magistrates’ Court on October 2. The allegations have not been tested in court.

A FUNERAL INTERRUPTED

The service for Cole was taking place at Teesside Crematorium when officers were called at around 12:30 p.m.

According to Cleveland Police, officers responded quickly to reports of a disturbance inside the service.

A 39-year-old man was arrested and taken into police custody.

After the arrest, the funeral was able to continue, while officers remained in the area to provide reassurance to those attending.

What should have been a deeply private moment of grief for Cole’s family had suddenly become another police incident.

THE FATHER NOW FACES THREE CHARGES

Police later confirmed that the man arrested at the funeral was Gye Worthy, Cole’s father.

He has been charged with common assault, a public-order offence and obstructing police.

Reports have alleged that the disturbance involved an altercation with another mourner. However, the circumstances surrounding the incident will ultimately have to be established through the court process.

The charges came just hours after the funeral, adding another painful chapter to a tragedy that has already devastated several families across Middlesbrough.

COLE WAS ONLY 17

Cole Worthy was one of five young men travelling in a Volkswagen Passat involved in the A66 collision on August 22.

The vehicle was travelling in the wrong direction on the A66 when it collided head-on with a marked police vehicle.

Cole and the four other occupants — Makai Saddington, 18, Theo Rae, 17, Michael Robert Cahill, 23, and Jakub Matusiak, 23 — were pronounced dead at the scene.

The two officers inside the police vehicle, PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, also lost their lives.

Seven people were lost in the crash.
