TWO-YEAR-OLD PETER MULCAIRE KILLED IN TRAGIC HIT-AND-RUN AFTER JUST STARTING PRESCHOOL

Peter Mulcaire had only just begun preschool and was described by his family as their “sunshine” and “pride” before a devastating collision cut his young life short.

A two-year-old boy has died after being struck by a jeep while playing outside his home in Rathkeale, County Limerick, Ireland — leaving his family and community facing an unimaginable loss.

The child, Peter Mulcaire, was playing on a toy tractor near his home in the Abbey Court area shortly before 4 p.m. when the collision happened on Saturday, September 5.

Peter suffered critical injuries and was taken to University Hospital Limerick by a family member. He was later pronounced dead.

The vehicle involved did not remain at the scene.

A FAMILY’S WORLD CHANGED IN MOMENTS

Peter had only recently started preschool, making the tragedy even more painful for those who knew him.

At his funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Church in Rathkeale, Fr. Eamonn Fitzgibbon described the little boy as his family’s “sunshine” and said Peter had left an impression on everyone he met.

His older brother, Jim, had walked Peter into his first preschool class just days earlier — a moment described as a “new adventure” for the two-year-old.

It was supposed to be the beginning of a new chapter in Peter’s childhood.

Instead, his family was preparing to say goodbye.

PETER REMEMBERED AS HIS FAMILY’S “SUNSHINE”

Peter is survived by his parents, Kerrie and James, his older brother Jim and baby sister Delilah.

At the funeral, relatives and friends gathered to remember the toddler through the things he loved.

His favorite songs, including “You Are My Sunshine” and “Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star,” were played inside the church.

Mourners also brought symbols of Peter’s short but cherished life, including his buggy, schoolbag and other personal belongings.

Staff from his school formed a guard of honor, while some mourners wore shirts featuring Peter’s image and the words “Forever 2.”

The service was filled with tributes to a little boy whose life, though brief, had touched an entire community.

A HEARTBREAKING FAMILY MILESTONE

Peter’s baby sister, Delilah, was also baptized during the funeral service — allowing her brother to be part of a milestone the family had hoped to celebrate together.

Friends and relatives gathered around the grieving family as they remembered Peter’s personality, his smile and the happiness he brought to those closest to him.

After the service, Peter was laid to rest in the New Cemetery in Rathkeale.

DRIVER ARRESTED AS INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

Gardaí said the vehicle involved in the collision left the scene.

A man in his 30s was subsequently arrested at another location on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant. He was taken to a Garda station to provide an evidential blood or urine sample and was later released pending analysis of the sample.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses and particularly for anyone who was in the Abbey Court area between approximately 3:20 p.m. and 4 p.m. and may have dashcam footage.

The investigation remains ongoing.

“A SHORT BUT WONDERFUL LIFE”

For Peter’s family, the investigation can never answer the most painful question of all: why their little boy’s life was taken just as he was beginning to discover the world around him.

He had just started preschool.

He had a new adventure ahead of him.

He had songs he loved, a family who adored him and a baby sister whose life he was meant to watch unfold.

Instead, those who loved Peter are now left with photographs, memories and the words spoken at his funeral.

A little boy remembered as “sunshine,” “pride” and a beloved golden boy.

Peter was only two.

But the love surrounding him at his final farewell made clear just how deeply he will be missed.
