SHE FLEW 1,600 MILES TO THE UK — CCTV TRACKED HER ACROSS A SEASIDE TOWN, THEN VITORIA VANISHED WITHOUT A TRACE

A Brazilian clinical psychologist travelled thousands of miles to Britain for a conference. Six months later, police are still trying to piece together her final movements after CCTV appeared to capture her boarding a bus, walking through a quiet seaside town — and eventually heading towards the water.

The disappearance of Vitoria Figueiredo Barreto, 31, has left investigators facing a haunting series of unanswered questions.

The Brazilian national, from Fortaleza, travelled to the UK after attending a conference in Morocco and arrived on February 2, 2026.

But just one month later, she would disappear in Brightlingsea, Essex.

More than six months on, there is still no confirmed explanation for what happened to her.

HER LAST KNOWN JOURNEY

Vitoria had been staying in the Southend area with her friend Liliane Silva, a PhD student and lecturer in clinical psychology.

The pair met at the University of Essex campus in Wivenhoe on March 3.

According to Silva, Vitoria appeared unusually quiet and was “clearly not well” when they met.

Later that afternoon, CCTV captured what police believe was Vitoria boarding the number 87 bus at Wivenhoe shortly after 1pm.

Around 30 minutes later, she got off the bus on Bellfield Avenue in Brightlingsea.

From there, a series of CCTV sightings began to build a picture of her movements.

But instead of revealing where she went, the footage has only deepened the mystery.

CCTV CAPTURED HER MOVEMENTS

Around an hour after leaving the bus, a doorbell camera appeared to capture Vitoria standing beside the road in the Hurst Green area.

Further footage showed a woman believed to be Vitoria walking across a field between Back Waterside Lane and Mill Street.

Then, shortly after midnight on March 4, CCTV captured another crucial moment.

A woman believed to be Vitoria was seen climbing over a fence into a boatyard in Brightlingsea at around 12:16am.

Minutes later, her movements were captured near an industrial site close to Brightlingsea Creek and the marina.

Then came one of the most important pieces of footage in the investigation.

A person believed to be Vitoria appeared to be in a rowing boat moving further into the harbour.

After that, the trail went cold.

HER BAG AND LAPTOP WERE FOUND

Vitoria was last known to be wearing a dark coat, blue turtleneck jumper, light blue jeans and black trainers.

She was also carrying a white shoulder bag bearing the words:

“PEOPLE OVER PROFIT.”

Police later found the bag at the industrial site on March 9.

Her laptop was also subsequently discovered in Brightlingsea.

Then, on the afternoon of March 4, a boat was found drifting near Bradwell-on-Sea.

The vessel had reportedly been unmoored from a pontoon near Copperas Road, close to where Vitoria’s bag was later discovered.

Police considered the possibility that Vitoria may have released the boat.

However, investigators found that its engine did not appear to have been started, and the vessel eventually drifted away from the area.

What happened after that remains unknown.

POLICE HAVE SEARCHED LAND, SEA AND COASTLINE

The search for Vitoria has involved specialist officers, marine units and air support.

Authorities have searched areas around Brightlingsea, the coastline and surrounding waterways in an effort to locate her or uncover evidence explaining her disappearance.

Her family and friends have also made repeated appeals for information.

Her sister Marina has urged people to check properties, outbuildings and other potential hiding places in case Vitoria somehow remains nearby.

Friends also appealed to members of the Brazilian community in Essex to display Brazilian flags, hoping they might help Vitoria recognise a welcoming place if she were still alive and able to see them.

HER PHONE AND FINANCES OFFERED FEW ANSWERS

One of the most frustrating aspects of the investigation is that police have examined Vitoria’s phone and financial records.

So far, investigators have reportedly found no significant or unexpected activity that explains where she went.

There has been no confirmed sighting of her since the early hours of March 4.

And there has been no confirmed discovery of Vitoria herself.

That leaves investigators with a timeline — but no clear ending.

SIX MONTHS LATER, THE QUESTIONS REMAIN

Why did Vitoria travel from Wivenhoe to Brightlingsea?

Why did she leave the bus and continue moving through the town?

What led her towards the boatyard and the water in the early hours of the morning?

And what happened after the last CCTV footage?

Police have not publicly established that Vitoria came to harm, nor have they announced a confirmed explanation for her disappearance.

For her family, however, every unanswered question means the search continues.

Six months after she vanished, the CCTV footage remains one of the clearest records of Vitoria’s final known movements.

It shows where she went.

It shows the route she took.

But it still cannot answer the most important question of all:

Where is Vitoria Figueiredo Barreto?

Essex Police continue to appeal for anyone with information about her disappearance or her movements around Brightlingsea to come forward.
