Wade Wilson became one of Florida’s most notorious death-row prisoners after being convicted of murdering two women on the same day in 2019.

In August 2024, a judge sentenced Wilson to death for the killings of Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz.

But more than two years after those sentences, one major question remains:

According to Gulf Coast News Now, Wilson’s attorneys abruptly ended their challenge after acknowledging that recent court rulings had affected the legal arguments they planned to present.

That did not mean the death sentences disappeared.

One of the most closely watched issues surrounding his case involves Florida’s newer death-penalty law.

Wilson’s jury did not unanimously recommend death.

The vote was 9–3 for one murder and 10–2 for the other.

Under Florida’s 2023 law, however, a death recommendation can be made when at least eight of the 12 jurors vote for death.

That change has become a major part of the legal controversy surrounding Wilson’s case.

So although the words “death sentence” appear in his court record, that does not automatically mean an execution date is set.

There are still legal proceedings that must be resolved.

And an execution requires another critical step: a death warrant.
